Till next time. ’05Jessi (Schimmel) McMullan, jessi.mcmullan@ alum.lehigh.edu InOctober 2021, theuniversity celebrated theDistinguished Alumni Awards. I’mproud to say that since the inceptionof these awards in2019, our class has swept thePublic ServiceAwardcategory! This year’s winner was Hetal Jani, whom I wrote about in the Summer 2020magazine. She is the founder and executive director of SPEAKHIRE. This nonprofit works to “build the social and cultural capital of immigrants so they can understand and choose career pathways that lead to career and life success. We expand the circle of possibilities for future leaders by forming the network connections that make realizing them tangible.” In the video played at her recognition, SusanThompson, the principal of GeorgeWashington High School inPhiladelphia, said: “She is profoundly and deeply committed to the students in doing anything and everything in her power to support them.” Hetal has been busy at work since our last update on her, but she did tell me that she traveled to the Azores, Portugal, over the summer. She called it a “magical place” and said, “I don’t usually want to go back somewhere since there’s somuchmore I have left to see, but Azores is definitely some place I’d go back to.” Youcanfindout about the amazing impactHetal andher teamarehaving at speakhire.org. In 2019, Ben Gucciardi was recognized with the Public Service Award for his work as the founder and Oakland director of SoccerWithout Borders (SWB). Ben founded SWB to create a space for people fromall backgrounds to come together, using the “universal language” of soccer to “create positive change for individuals, families, communities and the world.” SWB provides free, yearround soccer and educational programming for newcomer refugee and immigrant youth in the U.S., Nicaragua and Uganda, with focuses on access, health and trauma-informed youth development. What started as an idea that won the social entrepreneurship division in the 2006 Joan F. and JohnM. Thalheimer ’55 Student Entrepreneurs Competition at Lehigh is now amultimillion-dollar nonprofit, with 60+ staffmembers, seven year-round locations, and impacting nearly 8,000 young people each year. Speaking as a youth soccer coach myself, I’m blown away by what Ben and his team have done on and off the field. Check it out at soccerwithoutbor ders.org. Ben lived in Berkeley, Calif. He is still involved with the Baker Center at Lehigh. He recently wrote his first book, “West Portal,” which was published in 2021 and won a national prize for poetry. Also, remember that our 17th Reunion is this summer, June 9-12, 2022. Hope to seemany of you there! ’06Katie (Murray) Pennline, kpennline@ gmail.com Hi everyone! I hope this Bulletin finds you and your family well. Here are a few updates I received this past winter fromour 2006 classmates: This year was a big one for Lucius Clay and his wife, who welcomed a baby and bought their first home, a condo in Brooklyn. Margo (Jacobs) Collins shared a fun story withme! Thanks to the Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry, she and her husband, Mark, welcomed a newMountainHawk baby (AdaMaeve) into the family in June. She and Mark met inWashington, D.C., through another Lehigh graduate and fellow Kappa Alpha Theta alumna, Nicole (D’Elia) Gray ’08, after Margo and Nicole reconnected during the 150th playing of the Rivalry in NYC in 2014. Margo credits that game with launching this chapter of her life and plans to bring Ada to SouthMountain to see the Rivalry game in person when she is older! Please sendme your updates whenever you have them throughout the year! Look forward to hearing frommore of you soon! ’07Brian Roth, lehighclassof2007 @gmail.com Lehigh graduates Sam Shikiar CFA and AJ Fusco ’16 are bringing the Brown and White tradition to New York N O T E S 6 6 | L E H I G H B U L L E T I N
