Alumni Bulletin Spring 24

60 | LEHIGH ALUMNI BULLETIN | CLASS NOTES The big family news is our Olivia ’12 got engaged to Matt Fullam ’12. They will have an August 2024 wedding. We are obviously thrilled. Paige still lives with her two kitties in Portland, Maine, and works for Unum as a marketing director.” Lastly, my fraternity, Pi Lambda Phi, is returning to a house on the Hill in 2024, after an absence of 26 years. I guess my beer pong and campus crawl skills will have to be dusted off. Keep the emails coming. ’83 Nancy Liu Freedman, nancyliulehigh83@gmail.com Happy spring, Class of ’83! I was thrilled to receive some news, especially from classmates who have decided to retire early. Dianne (Goetz) Yamin writes: “After retiring from 32 years as the probate judge in Danbury, Conn., I went on an amazing four-month world cruise on the Queen Mary 2, visiting 18 countries and 40 ports. Rode a camel in Dubai, saw mosques in Abu Dhabi, amazing tours in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, fed kangaroos in Australia, enjoyed a Sydney Opera House show and a wild African safari with up-close elephants, lions, zebras, etc.” Wow, four months on a cruise ship and 18 locations! What a wonderful retirement celebration! Peter Feaver writes: “This summer, I published a book, ‘Thanks for Your Service: The Causes and Consequences of Public Confidence in the U.S. Military,’ with Oxford University Press. It is standard political science-type, death-by-data fare but perhaps made of more general interest because of the way the military have become unintended ‘combattants’ in our ongoing culture wars with perhaps lasting impact on how the public views the military. The launch of the book a few weeks ago involved a mini-Lehigh reunion of sorts when Mike Smerconish ’84 interviewed me about it on his Sirius XM radio show and also on his Saturday morning TV show on CNN.” Peter, congratulations on the book! Gary Grauer writes: “I officially retired in June 2021 and have been living the dream with my wife, Kathy (Hinker) Grauer. We spent a weekend in September in the D.C. area celebrating the wedding of Rob Reynolds’ ’85 daughter, Faith. We, along with four of the Fijis who were at Rob’s wedding in 1985 (Dwight Zuck ’84, Andy Rod, Chris Hamer ’81 and Tom Durels), were invited to his daughter’s (kind of like the circle of life).” See the Celebrations section for a photo. Gary, congratulations on your retirement! Martin Selzer writes: “I retired in spring 2021 after a 30-plus-year career in pharmaceutical drug development. My career began at SmithKline Beecham (SB) before moving to Johnson & Johnson/Janssen and finally ending back at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Throughout my career, I participated in the differentiation and approval of pharmaceutical, vaccine and consumer healthcare products. Since 2019 (not 2020 for obvious reasons), I’ve been back at Lehigh each summer for the Summer Science Expo to serve as a judge. Each of those days has been a ton of fun, and I have been amazed at the wonderful projects the students are working on and the support the faculty and university give them.” Marty, congratulations on your retirement, and thanks for supporting the students! Marty and I have known each other since first grade. Kathleen McDermott-Hotte writes: “Since graduation, I worked in the banking and financial services industry, until I retired five years ago: at Citibank in the United States and, after relocating to Toronto (FS capital of Canada) in 1998, at E&Y Management Consulting and KPMG LLP. In addition, I obtained my MBA at St. Louis University. One month after relocating to Toronto, I met my husband, a French-Canadian man (Michel). In December 2010, after many years of unsuccessful infertility treatments, we adopted our daughter (Wynter), from Russia. Wynter is a smart and radiant high school senior who is in the midst of applying to universities in Ontario to study business.” Kathleen also noted that they faced political obstacles and were successful in suing Russia to adopt Wynter. Enjoy your winter and spring, and please send me your news. I will be attending more Lehigh events, including Reunion on June 7-9, 2024. Hope to see you at an event! ’84 Thomas Keating, 2343 15th Ave. N, St. Petersburg, FL 33713; thomaskeating@yahoo.com Let us not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. I think I can safely say that none of us came to Lehigh to find a life partner, but some of us did find that special someone to share a life with at our alma mater. Some even got the full monty—marriage ceremony in Packer Memorial Church and a reception at Hotel Bethlehem. And then, there were those adults, my heroes, who found love after Lehigh, and still included their Lehigh people in their celebrations and their lives. Why am I marriage philosophizing? I was inspired by the account of James Hart’s summer hijinks as dictated to his soulmate, my trusty correspondent, Robin (Cohen) Hart. To wit: “So, unlike last summer where Jim and I moved both our kids a combined total of three times, we only moved one this summer. Our daughter, Mackenzie, finished her residency at FSU Multidisciplinary Center, defended her dissertation and relocated to San Antonio, Texas, as an assistant professor at UTSA and a full-fledged Ph.D.! “This was also the summer of many concerts, one of which was in Boston where we joined Doug Grandin and his wife, Lisa, for a great weekend of breweries and music. Recently, we treated Joe Clifford to his very first country concert. His wife, Taffy Curtin, could not join us as she was in Spain with their daughter Lisa, and she hates country music anyway. But, Joe came through and was like a kid in a candy store (if the candy were red wine and IPA). “Earlier this month, we had the absolute privilege to be the guests of Dave Hines (of Greeker-eating fame, not to mention dry wit, raconteur and an all-around great human being) and his wife, Debra, when they renewed their marriage vows, hosting over 100 people in an epic, four-day celebration in Bermuda. Several of Dave’s Delta Phi brothers were in attendance, including David Bailin, Joe Robinson, Todd Kuramoto ’83 and Greg Moran ’85, as well as Tommy Lee ’86, Rob Honens ’82 and Jim Kent ’86. We also met fellow Sig Ep groupie/Palmer girl Jill Lewis ’85 and had fun hanging out periodically with her. Dave and Debra were the most amazing, gracious hosts and can certainly rock second careers in event planning if they choose to do so. I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that what they pulled off was nothing short of magical.” Okay, folks, let’s call this what it is: a Richards I destination reunion complete with three hallmates and a Gryphon! Congratulations, Dave and Debra, on a great marriage and great celebration! Heading back to old South Mountain, I attended the
