Alumni Bulletin Spring 24

CLASS NOTES | SPRING 2024 | 61 Lehigh-Lafayette tailgates for Psi Upsilon, Delta Chi and the Class of 1984. It was an unusually large turnout, and it was pleasant to talk to a large number of undergraduates who were very sociable and interested in meeting alumni and sharing stories. And so, it is reunion time again. This time is one of the big ones—the 40th. At the tailgate, I met committee members John Compton, Mary Beth (Cooleen) Tully and Laura Gill, who are working to provide you with another unforgettable reunion experience. Join us June 6-9 in Bethlehem for all the festivities. Stay tuned for communications from your Reunion committee detailing all the fun! Hope to see you there! Last and least, if you want to pass along class information, compare box scores, arrange a transfer from a foreign prince or cover the spread, do cut out the middleman and send a card, letter or newfangled email directly to me per the above. Don’t hesitate. ’85 Jennifer Sheehan, (240) 401-3724, jksheehan@aol.com A true Lehigh wedding was held last September in Kiawah Island, S.C. Nick Bancroft ’17, the son of the late Bonnie (Winokur) Bancroft and Ned Bancroft, was married to Emily Beaman ’17. Kyle (Friedman) Greenberg and husband David Greenberg ’84 were in attendance with their son Henry Greenberg ’17, as were Nick’s brothers Corey Bancroft ’20 and Auggie Bancroft ’25. That is quite a few Lehigh students and graduates just within those two 1985 families! I didn’t make it back for the Lafayette game this year, but I saw that some of the regular 1985 tailgaters/attendees were there, including Joe Yammarino, who is known for a great tailgate and has hosted a bunch of the Alpha Sigs. Karyn Yost-Thomson is being featured as part of the 50 Years of Women’s Athletics Hall of Fame series on the university website. There’s a lovely video with a current lacrosse player honoring Karyn’s accomplishments. Karyn played both field hockey and lacrosse and earned All-American honors in both. She was named to the U.S. women’s lacrosse team in the summer of 1985. ’86 Dave Polakoff, 400 E. 71st St., #3K, New York, NY 10021. david@ dpolakoff.com. Look for “Lehigh University Class of 1980” “Won’t you tell me, where have all the good times gone?” (The Kinks) For starters, how about looking in Bethlehem, Lehigh-Lafayette weekend 2023? Present at tailgates and/or the game: Diane (Moyer) Horn and Marty Horn, Marie (Bradshaw) Sonde, Jodi Friedman, Wes Schantz, Greg Heard, Jennifer (Moore) Benn and Rennie Benn, Kevin Dwyer, Peter Bedevian, Kari (Hackbarth) Arienti, Linda Kagan Horowitz, Jon Daniels, Dave Trimble and Sammies, R. Scot “Scooter” Bross, David Greenbaum, Alan Bluestine, Marc Mathios, Jeff Silverman, Brenda (Tabora) Kay and Scott Kay, John King, Glen Friedman, Joel Stuttman, Brian Okun and yours truly. Some ’86ers were game or telecast hosting, but Nevagay Abel was scholastic bowl tournament hosting, in her sixth year as the Rockford, Ill., Auburn Scholastic Bowl team’s head coach. In 2023, the team won the Illinois High School Association’s Class 2A State Championship (the third in the team’s history); finished 13th in National Academic Quiz Tournaments High School National Championship Tournament; and finished eighth in the PACE National Scholastic Championship. Nevagay was named the Class 2A Coach of the Year by the Illinois High School Scholastic Bowl Coaches Association, and all of this while serving as vice president, engineering for Quantum Design. Nevagay’s son, Justin, is a junior, studying aerospace engineering, at the University of Illinois. At one of Lehigh University Strategic Plan update events, five ’86ers, Linda (Kagan) Horowitz, Ken Fuirst, Vince Mueller, Heather (Truesdell) Vimba and yours truly, got to Carnegie Hall, despite the fact we never practiced (how to get there). Linda and Heather, plus Emery dormmates Melissa (Capuano) Rohland, Jill Lovecchio, Jill (Henry) Schopf and Lorraine Heinen, spent a girls’ weekend at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa. ’Nuff said? Varying attendees from their 2018 meet-up (see column #90, spring 2018), Stoughton 3 ladies reunited, along with Gryphon Carol (Adamcek) Ellis ’83, in Mount Joy, Pa. Amy Roth’s daughter, Rachel, is a junior and health science major at Northeastern University, with plans to become a physician’s assistant. When Rachel is not studying, Amy and Rachel enjoy cheering on the Huskies ice hockey team, and while it was no skate in the park, they had an adventure of a lifetime, trekking on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Susan (Peper) Boudreau lives in Bucks County, Pa., also enjoying time at Ocean Grove, N.J. Susan works on Mathematica’s Princeton, N.J., legal team. She and husband Jeff are one-third away from being empty nesters. Tom and Jackie (Maher) McGlone have been in West Chester, Pa., these last 26 years, having raised three kids. Jackie had put her master’s degree in education on hiatus and is now back to working in a variety of part-time roles. Ellen (Villegas) Rudel works in generics marketing with TEVA Pharmaceuticals, Parsippany, N.J. Ellen and Ted ’87 live in Motown (Morristown, N.J.), where Ellen volunteers with The Mayo Performing Arts Center. The Rudels enjoy hosting many ’86ers at their Lake George, N.Y., condo. Son Chris is a General Motors software engineer in Roswell, Ga., having graduated from Steven Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, N.J., (home of Aert Teunissen Van Putten’s brewery, the first in New Jersey, in 1641, but I digress); and daughter Holly defended her environmental engineering thesis from Yale and started a postdoctorate fellowship at the California State House in Sacramento (named for the Sacramento River, the largest river in California, but again, I digress). Other Stoughton reunion attendees included Lisa (Fauci) Keenan and Judy (Lannin) Panagakos (see Judy’s update in column #106, fall 2022). “Time to be movin’ on, fare thee well, and so long. When you wake, I’ll be gone, time to be movin’ on.” (Jonathan Tyler) ’87 Laura M. D’Orsi, 26 Falcon Ridge Circle, Holmdel, NJ 07733. (732) 241-5229 (H); lauramdorsi@yahoo.com It has been a busy fall. My daughter is a freshman at Lehigh and loves it as much as we did. There are some other 1987 members who have kids at Lehigh; it has been fun to see them at Family and Founder’s Weekend and Lehigh-Lafayette. They include Peter Cunningham, Bill Tillinghast and Todd Davison, who have freshmen. Pete’s daughter is a member of the women’s soccer team. Also with freshmen at Lehigh are Kerry (Loughman) O’Hearn ’88, Tamara Mohuchy-Collins ’89 and Jim Mongillo ’88. It is especially fun when your kids become friends without any
