(610) 737-2156 (M); chuck. steele@alum.lehigh.edu When it comes to timing, this specifc issue has to present one of my most awkward frustrations since becoming your correspondent in 1995. I’mwriting for an April deadline. That means that we are two months away from our 50th Reunion at Lehigh, and you won’t read any of this until August. That will also be my next issue deadline, so that any Reunion “news” I present there will not be visible in the Alumni Bulletin until December! Frank Mooney sent me a fantastic e-mail: “I was on campus twice within a month recently. The frst time was in mid-October for the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Lehigh Men’s Soccer Team; we were the Middle Atlantic Conference Champions that year. Through the eforts of Nate Hughes, the Athletics Partnership’s representative for men’s soccer, and Coach Dean Koski, a fantastic event was planned to reunite our teamwith Lehigh’s frst Patriot League Championship team from 2000. There was a tented pregame tailgate near the soccer stadiumwith food and drink, souvenirs (shirts, beer cozies and a booklet highlighting our season), a visit to the locker room for the pregame pep talk, followed by the game (a 2-0 win over Lafayette!), plus halftime on-feld introductions of both championship teams. “Afterward, there was a get-together at Goosey Gander in town. Despite the rain, we had a tremendous time being together and reminiscing. Beside myself from our class, Joe Strickland, Jay Stiver, Jef Frey, Eric Gerhart, Mike Perlow and Chip Gaughen were joined by teammates from other classes: Randy Tinfow ’74, Dana Pizarro ’73, TomKlonick ’74, Bill Altenpohl ’74 and Dan Richter ’73. Those who could not attend included Bill White ’74, Stu Bayne and Bobby Tootell. We all vowed to be there for the centennial anniversary of our championship—LOL! Our next mission is to get our coach, the late TomFleck, into Lehigh’s Athletics Hall of Fame! “On the Saturday before Thanksgiving, when the Lehigh-Lafayette football is traditionally played, I attended this year—my frst since the Yankee Stadium contest in 2014. My daughter, Anne Mooney Rubin ’01; her husband, Daniel Rubin ’01; and kids, Kathleen (14), Elizabeth (12) and Jackson (9), were going to meet two of Anne’s Lehigh roommates, Margot Feeney ’01 and Molly Slevin ’01, and their families for tailgating and the game. At the last minute, due to ‘scheduling conficts’ only Anne and Elizabeth (Lizzie) could attend, so I gladly accepted their invitation to join them. We had a great time on a beautiful November afternoon and Lehigh prevailed, 17-14, in a hard-fought game! It was so nice to be able to attend both events after being cooped up for so long during the pandemic.” Frank and I are connected on LinkedIn, and I saw a notifcation from his profle just after he had sent me the e-mail cited above. “…starting on 8/14/72 and after 49 years and 141 days working full-time in banking (plus summer internships), I’ll be retiring as of 12/31/21. Starting in the late 1960s as a summer intern at Franklin National Bank in Roosevelt Field then, after graduating from Lehigh University, going to work for Security National Bank in Melville, to surviving numerous mergers and acquisitions (Royal National, Chemical, MHT, Chase, Bank One, Sterling, Independence, Sovereign and Santander), two ‘downsizings’ and, in between, getting my MBA fromAdelphi University at night while having a family, it’s been quite a journey. There have been lots of highs and lows (many more highs than lows!) and fun along the way!” ’73Patrick Fekula, 1891 Evans Drive South, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250. (904) 4514949 (M); Pfekula7@gmail.com One-half of a century … that’s 50 years. Think about it … that’s a long time. Less than a year from now, we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of our graduation from Lehigh. So, let’s get nostalgic, as I take you back to what was happening in the country, and the world, during our graduation year: The movie “American Graffti” premiered in the United States; The Watergate hearings began; and Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned after being accused of tax evasion and receiving bribes; The World Trade Center became the tallest building in the world; and the 108-foor Sears Tower was completed in Chicago; Secretariat became the frst horse since Citation in 1948 to win the Triple Crown; S UMM E R 2 0 2 2 | 4 9
