Lehigh Fall Bulletin 2022

N O T E S teering with the Fountain Hill ambulance squad and working in campus security when she was a student. Congratulations to Paul Camuti and Sandra Denton on their appointment to the Lehigh Board of Trustees. They join Ann Lewnes and Drew Freed as members of the board. The Class of ’83 seems to be well represented on the Board of Trustees. I have some sad news to report on the passing of Lisa Gorab of Westfeld, N.J. While at Lehigh, Lisa was a sister at Alpha Gamma Delta and majored in fnance. She was an attorney and was the frst female president and managing director of Wilentz, Goldman and Spitzer. She will be missed by her two daughters, Sydney and Brooke. Condolences to Lisa’s family. Lehigh Reunion I had a fabulous time at the Reunion this year. There were three years celebrating to make up for the two reunions that were canceled due to the pandemic. It was fun to see people from all those years come back to campus, and I enjoyed seeing people that I had not seen since campus days. Here’s a quick shout-out to some that I reconnected with. At the Brown &White Awards night, I celebrated with Alumni Award winners YoGi Perry ’76, Curt Schmidt ’75, Reginald Jennings ’70, James Maida ’85 and Linda Kagan Horowitz ’86. Arthur Anderman ’56 fnally won but was unable to attend the event. I was honored to be a judge at the parade and see all the classes march. After the parade, I sawmy Lehigh big sister Leslie (Kline) Davidson ’82, Sue Yee ’82 and Barbara (Robertson) Newton ’82. I was hoping to see Barbara’s husband, Jef Newton ’84. Back in the ’80s, Jef and I commuted together on the SEPTA train. Maybe we will meet up at another reunion. At the Theta Chi open house, I met up with brothers Dave Hankins ’86, Ken Litwin ’85, Rich Bastian ’86, Vito Morabito, ’85, Frank Munero ’86, Ken Fuirst ’86 and Joe Hancock ’85. Reminder, our 40th reunion is next year, June 8-11, 2023. Mark your calendar, and I hope to see you there! Please let me know if you want to help organize our reunion. Enjoy your fall and winter, and please send me news and photos. Football season is starting again, so stop by our tailgate in the reserved lot. I hope to see you at other Lehigh events! ’84Thomas Keating, 250 Carillon Parkway #421, St. Petersburg, FL 33716 thomaskeating@yahoo.com Greetings, Lehigh people, ye esteemed and meritorious Class of 1984, my heroes! I often spend time looking back in preparing the column, but it occurred to me that our Lehigh experience was not just four short years on SouthMountain but 42 years of Lehigh in our lives, past, present and future. Times change, fashions change, but this bond abides and will always. That is a great thing! I received quite a few submissions from our classmates, for which I am grateful, but remember the Alumni Bulletin’s unofcial motto: “All the news that fts, we print.” Six hundred words is a limit that falls hard on one who lingered uncomfortably long while kissing the Blarney Stone. Can a mineral fle a harassment suit? I hope not. Jonathan Branton sent an email in April saying that he recently published, through Amazon.com, a book titled “The Honor Killing of David L. Branton.” The book is about the disappearance of his older brother David (Lehigh Class of 1982) and his ideas about what happened to him. David went missing in January of 1993, 29 years ago, and nothing further was ever heard from him. Check out this book and support your classmate! TomWhelan wrote to say that he met Kevin Kettler and his coterie of two daughters and two daughters-in-law in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at the Tortuga music festival in April. They reminisced about life at Lehigh and somehow remembered the IEEE casino bus trips to Atlantic City and the great fun they had on the bus ride there. (Were adult beverages involved?) As you will see, a theme emerged involving a number that shall not be named but was unimaginable only a few years ago. Received a nice note from Mary Stewart in June: “Marian Nalitt, Elaine (Gebhard) King, Holly (Carlson) Foster, Susy (Eckert) Shea, Linda (Schifman) Martin, Jessica (Trimble) Fone, Shelly (Siuciak) Schif, Rena (Sidrer) Itzhaky (all the way from Israel), Patty (Burke) Savage, Carole (Hansen) Kraemer ’85 and myself, Mary Stewart, all descended onWater Color, Fla., in late March—to celebrate our ‘Year of 60.’ “We enjoyed 5 o’clock cocktails, breakfast Bloody Marys, happy hour lunches, the Salad Bowl game (shout-out to ST), a beach bonfre, nightly pajama dance parties (not exactly Sigs benches, but close enough), singing, bike rides, pickleball and, of course, lounging in the sun (with appropriate levels of sunscreen)! Capped of the week by going out for a birthday dinner, complete with candles and streamers and birthday singing provided by the restaurant. “We had great weather and a great week. Although our lives have certainly changed, I am more certain than ever of the strength of our friendship. Don’t blink, friends, it goes by too fast! Celebrating 40 years of friendship and 60 years of life.” Mary welcomed her frst grandson—second grandchild— into the world in August 2021 and says, “All the great things you hear about being a grandparent are true! Finally, I recently started, what I intend to bemy last job before retirement, as an attorney with the NewHampshire attorney general’s ofce, consumer protection division.” What a wonderful message for all of us from a group of Gamma Phi Beta sisters who kept themselves in each other’s lives, with all the ups and downs, failures and triumphs, heartache and exhilaration. Thanks, Mary, Tom, Jonathan and others (you knowwho you are) for the updates. Keep them coming, you bright, beautiful Lehigh people. See you next time. ’85Jennifer Sheehan, (240) 401-3724, jksheehan@aol.com I am so excited to have some updates on people who haven’t appeared in my column either ever before or in a long time! Our combined reunion with the classes of ’84 and ’86 was held in June, and we had good representation from near and far. Here are some updates from attendees. Gary Emig lives south of Denver with his husband, David, and they are self-employed doing real estate investing. They enjoy skiing and hiking the Rocky Mountains as much as possible. Also living in Denver are Scott Sendel and his wife, Rebecca (Shapiro) Sendel ’86. Rebecca is currently chief of staf in the services organization at Cisco, and Scott is part of the sales organization at Palo Alto Networks. With two children grown and on their own, they enjoy lots of hiking and skiing in the Colorado mountains and traveling near and far whenever possible. Over the years, Rebecca and Scott have remained very involved with Lehigh—hosting freshman sendofs, doing some recruiting and attending as 5 8 | L E H I G H B U L L E T I N
