Lehigh Fall Bulletin 2022

N O T E S Deb Dabrowski Delmage and I had fun catching up not only at Reunion, but on the drive down to Lehigh. Deb and John live in Arundel, Maine, where they enjoy lots of outdoor activities and Deb enjoys riding her new horse. Sad fact … Did you know there are only 11 (out of 31) fraternities left? ’78Gail D. Reinhart, 215 N. Center St., #1407, San Antonio, TX 78202-2723. ladygai lus@yahoo.com Greetings from San Antonio, Texas, or maybe I should say from hell since, as of the end of July, with brutal August still ahead, we’d already experienced 48 days of over-100-degree temperatures! My inbox hasn’t been as hot, and I thought I might not have a column to submit, but three of you came through at the last minute. Stephen Dill presented “The Marketing Survival Guide” to the Rufalo Noel Levitz (RNL) National Conference in Washington, D.C., in July 2022. The audience consisted of higher education marketing and enrollment professionals. You can see a photo of Stephen in action on our class Facebook group, facebook.com/groups/ Lehigh1978. In January 2023, Dennis Sprick will mark three 25-year professional anniversaries: 25 years since he graduated from the Somerset School of Massage Therapy; 25 years since he joined the American Massage Therapy Association; and 25 years since he founded his one-man massage therapy business, The Heartful Touch. Wanting to help others as he was helped by massage as a runner, starting with physiotherapist JimMathews at Lehigh, Dennis completed a part-time, yearlong massage therapy program in 1997, while continuing his career as a newspaper copy editor. After graduating in January 1998, Dennis established his business and ofered massage part time until, after 35-and-a-half years in journalism, he took a buyout from his newspaper employer in December 2013 and made The Heartful Touch his fulltime gig. Since January 2017, Dennis has enjoyed Jersey Shore living and a thriving and growing massage therapy business in Bradley Beach, N.J. A bonus of getting news from Dennis is, not only did he submit it in column-ready format, but he even sent a follow-up correcting his own typo! At the end of June 2022, after 27 years managing the Connecticut State Capitol facilities, Eric Connery decided to “take the retirement money and run.” Everyone asks himwhat he’s going to do next, but so far, he’s been too busy to fgure it out. For now, he’s become a professional volunteer. He doesn’t plan to move but is looking for new adventures to pursue and hopes to see a lot of classmates at our 45th reunion in 2023. That’s all the news I have on hand, and I’ve easily stayed under my 600-word limit, so please send more! You can reach me by snail mail, email or our class Facebook group. ’79Lance M. Bell, 952 River Run Dr., Macedonia, OH 44056-2369. (216) 219-3729 (mobile); lanceb344@gmail.com I attended the mega-Reunion in June and ran into Barry Glickman, Michael Silverman and Caesar Gorski there. This was not our reunion year, but I wanted to tour through some of the new construction on campus and participate in a few events I wouldn’t normally have time to experience. The new Health, Science and Technology building is impressive, and I thoroughly enjoyed the reception and tour by the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department. I also watched three deer grazing in a small meadow area planted behind one of the new residence halls. A new business building on the lower campus was nearly complete. ReunionFest on Friday night was a great event for socializing, and Cory Ackerman was playing with the Lehigh Alumni Big Band Swing. The band sounded great. and I enjoyed both the playing and the singing. Speaking of Cory, he texted me during July after he read an earlier class column. It turns out he was familiar with the restaurant (Mavis Winkle’s Irish Pub) where Jim Esch and I enjoyed a meal. Cory has been working remotely since 2020, and his company, Safran, has a facility in Twinsburg, Ohio. Safran’s facility is close to both the pub and my house. It is a small world. Cory has visited this facility twice. Cory also shared that he has only missed a handful of Alumni Band performances since 1979. For ReunionFest, the band had one rehearsal in the morning and then played the gig during the evening. Dan Levinson shared that a group of ATO brothers gathered in June at Lambertville Station. The ’79ers in attendance were Chuck Dippo, Dan Levinson, Peter Sudano, Tom Kulp and Dave Snyder. According to Dan, Dave is the most recent newlywed, getting married in Vermont during 2021. Dan was visiting from the Atlanta area, where he and his wife live. They relocated to move closer to their two grown children, both living in Atlanta. Dan shared that it was great catching up and reliving Lehigh days with his fraternity brothers. He also sent a photo, which can’t be printed here. You’ll have to take my word for it that the guys look great. As always, I and your classmates would love to hear from you. Our 45th reunion is less than two years away, and I also look forward to seeing many of you there! ’80Gary Chan, (847) 902-8881 (C); gkchan80@ alum.lehigh.edu David Barnes sends his greetings to all from the San Francisco Bay Area. David retired in 2020 and, after a year of consulting, is “enjoying the heck out of retirement.” This past August, he did the Sturgis Run, followed by a round of golf at St. Andrews, Scotland, and a Danube cruise. David is not really sure how he ever had time to work. He sends his best to the Geology Department. Larry Bowman and Tim Crush, Phi Kappa Theta brothers, celebrated July 4th in Alaska with Larry’s oldest son, Cameron, Stanford MBA classmate Steve Pollack and Tim’s nephew Antonio. They landed 50 sockeye salmon in one day! Mark Hembarsky and Susan (Bregstein) Hembarsky’s Lehigh-based clan enjoyed another major milestone. Their daughter, Morgan Hembarsky ’13, married Tanner Nielsen inMay. Other Lehigh alums shared in the celebrations: Peter Garibaldi and Karen (Boczar) Garibaldi ’79, Craig Madsen, Charlie Keener ’79 and John Fitzgerald ’78, along with their wives. Mark and Susan’s other daughter, Rebecca, a Lafayette grad (imagine that), and Lehigh husband, Ralph Missimer ’12, are expecting a son in early August, while their daughter is nearing the age of 2. Both kids will be receiving ongoing gifts of Lehigh gear from their grandparents—nothing like planting the dream early! John Heidenreich moved to Miami Beach at the end of June. John loves the beach and loves no longer paying New 5 6 | L E H I G H B U L L E T I N
