A Sigma Phi brother, Mr. Black served in the U.S. Navy and retired from the Reserves as a lieutenant. He made his career in the oil industry and was a volunteer firefighter. His stepson, Peter Dietz, is a member of the Class of 1988. He was also a member of the Tower Society. William E. Murray III ’52, Sugar Land, Texas, Sept. 21, 2022. Mr. Murray was a high diver for the swimming and diving team, and a Delta Tau Delta brother. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea, after which he went to work in the oilfield services industry. He invented an energy saving process pump used in the refinery process known as Split Flow, for which he received two U.S. patents. Edmund J. Purdy Jr. ’52, Honey Brook, Pa., Nov. 18, 2022. Mr. Purdy was an Alpha Chi Rho brother and a member of the swimming team. He worked at PECO for 36 years and wrote a book on total quality management. He was a member of the Tower Society. Robert J. Terry ’52, Pompton Plains, N.J., Dec. 18, 2022. A Theta Xi brother, Mr. Terry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for many years as the vice president of planning and analysis for Ciba-Geigy. John R. Armbruster ’53, Penfield, N.Y., Nov. 26, 2022. Mr. Armbruster made his 34year career with E.I. duPont de Nemours. Cecil R. Jones Jr. ’53, Naples, Fla., Nov. 11, 2022. Mr. Jones was a Delta Phi brother and a member of the Cliff Clefs. He made his career in the steel industry, retiring as a vice president of Warren Consolidated Inc. He was a member of the Tower Society. Mark S. Kaufmann ’53, New York, N.Y., Nov. 17, 2022. A Pi Lambda Phi brother, Mr. Kaufmann was also a member of many honorary societies. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea. He worked for many years as senior vice president and director of corporate development for Chase Manhattan Bank. Upon retirement from Chase, he became chairman of Kaufmann & Partners, LLC, a financial consultancy. He served on the board of the Martindale Institute at Lehigh, where he was also a member of the College of Business and Economics Advisory Council. Erwin G. Meeh Jr. ’53, Houston, Texas, Nov. 16, 2022. Mr. Meeh was a member of Tau Beta Pi honor society. He was also involved with fundraising as an alumnus. Joseph V. Yonushka ’53, Duryea, Pa., Sept. 1, 2022. Mr. Yonushka was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a pioneer in developing semiconductors for RCA. Clyde S. Harmes III ’54 M.S. ’59, Schnecksville, Pa., Dec. 20, 2022. Mr. Harmes worked for Lamm’s Machines as a mechanical engineer. Grover K. Houpt ’54, Wayne, Pa., Oct. 20, 2022. Mr. Houpt worked for Automatic Timing and Controls in research and development. H.C. Judd Jr. ’54, Denver, Colo., Sept. 3, 2022. A Beta Theta Pi brother, Mr. Judd served in the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War. He worked in sales for several Fortune 500 companies. Joseph D. Menkes ’54, Boynton Beach, Fla., Sept. 13, 2022. Mr. Menkes was a Pi Lambda Phi brother and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He spent his career developing real estate in Brooklyn and retail projects on Long Island. Martin H. Pearl ’54, Naples, Fla., Aug. 24, 2022. Mr. Pearl served in the U.S. Army. As an undergraduate, he was a Tau Delta Phi brother and member of the tennis team. He owned Martin H. Pearl and Company and worked as a CPA. As an alumnus, he volunteered with his class for over 20 years. He was honored with the Alumni Award in 1984. His son, Douglas Neil Pearl, is a member of the Class of 1993. He was a member of the Tower Society. Alvin A. Albright Jr. ’55, Allentown, Pa., Dec. 21, 2022. Mr. Albright was a U.S. Army veteran and was a starting pitcher on the U.S. Army baseball team. He worked at Bethlehem Steel for over 30 years and retired as assistant director for personnel. Duncan S. Cook ’55, Lakewood, Wash., Oct. 4, 2022. A Delta Tau Delta brother, Mr. Cook made a 28-year career with the U.S. Army as a senior aviator and adviser. Ronald A. Friedman ’55, Tamarac, Fla., April 24, 2021. Mr. Friedman was a Pi Lambda Phi brother. He was an attorney for 50 years. Kenneth D. Hendrix ’55, Bethlehem, Pa., Oct. 5, 2022. A Theta Xi brother, Mr. Hendrix was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. He made his career with PSE&G as a principal engineer. He was a very active alumnus: he volunteered for his class; was a member of the 50Game Club, the Senior Alumni Council and the Greek Alumni Council; and could often be found at the Visitor’s Desk in Alumni Memorial or Iacocca Hall. For his dedication, he won the Alumni Award in 2005 and the Robert A. Harrier Award in 2008. He was also a member of the Tower Society. His partner, Pat Girke ’55W, is a member of the Lehigh family. Normal F. Kaelber ’55, Palm Desert, Calif., Nov. 5, 2022. Mr. Kaelber was captain of the lacrosse team, played ice hockey and was a Phi Delta Theta brother. He was a veteran pilot of the U.S. Air Force. His work in the oil and gas industry led him to Alaska, where he transitioned to the construction industry. He was a member of the Asa Packer and Tower societies. His son, Darrell Kaelber ’83, daughter-inlaw, Judith (Weer) Kaelber ’82, and grandchild, Fritz Kaelber ’14, are members of the Lehigh family. Robert E. Kiley ’55, Williamsburg, Va., Oct. 29, 2022. Mr. Kiley was a Phi Kappa Theta brother, as well as a member of the soccer and track teams. He made his career in the insurance industry with Prudential. As an alumnus, he volunteered extensively with his class, serving in many leadership positions, including as class correspondent for over 50 years. His service was recognized with the Alumni Award in 1985. He was a member of the Asa Packer and Tower societies. His grandchild, Margaret Taylor, is a member of the Class of 2018. He worked as a telecommunications executive, including launching Ramslo and Merstad. Duncan P. Aspinwall ’56, Hanover, N.H., Sept. 23, 2022. Mr. Aspinwall was a Chi Psi brother. He served in the U.S. Army in West Germany. Thomas R. Burns ’56, Allentown, Pa., Nov. 27, 2022. Mr. Burns was a member of the track team. He worked for Bethlehem Steel for 40 years. Robert M. Heinz ’56, Phoenixville, Pa., Oct. 25, 2022. Mr. Heinz was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked in finance for 20 years at DuPont Company. His brother, John Heinz, is a member of the Class of 1946.
