Armstrong was a member of Alpha Chi Rho, the track team, Tau Beta Pi and the Mustard & Cheese. He worked for Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania as a professor of marketing and was an author, journal editor, and forecasting and marketing expert. Paul M. Hirsch ’59, Boca Raton, Fla., May 22, 2023. Hirsch was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu. He worked as a dentist. Robert G. Hughes ’59, Ocean City, N.J., Sept. 3, 2023. An Alpha Sigma Phi member, Hughes worked as a minister, professor and president of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. George D. Hulse ’59, Virginia Beach, Va., Aug. 17, 2023. An Alpha Chi Rho member, Hulse worked for the Ocean County Board of Taxation. Robert J. Sherman ’59, Lahaska,Pa. June 29, 2023. Sherman, a Tau Delta Phi member, began his long career at investment firm Bache and Company, which later became Prudential Securities. He retired from the firm as president of the retail division. His parent, Joseph R. Sherman ’28 and his grandchild, Jennifer Angelo ’16, are part of the Lehigh family. 1960s Carlos E. Bullos ’60, Addison, Texas, Dec. 1, 2023. Bullos was the founder and president of Goodwill Industries Venezuela. Richard S. Geney ’60, Oak Ridge, N.C., Nov. 24, 2023. Geney retired as general manager of General Environmental Systems. George W. Line ’60, Mequon, Wis., Nov. 28, 2022. A. Vinton MacPhee ’60, Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Aug. 30, 2023. A Phi Sigma Kappa member, MacPhee founded and owned CVM Industries for 60 years. Robert M. Walters ’60, Washington, D.C., Aug. 14, 2023. Walters was the editor-in-chief of The Brown and White. He worked as a journalist, covering many breaking stories and writing a syndicated column. Edward O. Raynolds ’61, Short Hills, N.J., Oct. 1, 2023. A Lambda Chi Alpha member, Raynolds was a public relations executive, specializing in financial communications, investor relations and crisis management. He was a principal at The Dilenschneider Group and a former senior managing director at Hill and Knowlton, Inc. Van J. Filipos ’62, Bethlehem, Pa., Nov. 5, 2023. Filipos was a Sigma Nu member. He worked as an accountant for Filipos, McDonald, Abbott & Co. His children, Melisa Ann Filipos ’89 and John V. Filipos ’91, are members of the Lehigh family. Ralph F. Mateer Jr. ’62, Naperville, Ill., Oct. 19, 2023. Donald T. Pitman ’62, Oscoda, Mich., Aug. 25, 2023. Pitman was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He worked at Once Removed, an antique restoration business. Robert S. Pritchard ’62, San Rafael, Calif., Aug. 13, 2023. A Gryphon and member of the Glee Club, Pritchard was an expert on sea ice and its physical and engineering properties. He taught at universities and was president of Icecasting, Inc. He was also a member of the Tower Society. John A. Rudy ’62, Healdsburg, Calif., Aug. 16, 2023. A Lambda Chi Alpha member, Rudy worked as an accountant and banker. Frank J. Schaffer ’62, Bethlehem, Pa., Nov. 28, 2023. Schaffer served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a draftsman for many years and retired from Bethlehem Steel. Rodger C. Wichterman ’62, Plymouth Meeting, Pa., Nov. 18, 2023. Wichterman was a U.S. Army reservist. He worked for Pricewaterhouse, Conversion Systems, and was an independent business consultant. Martin C. Faga ’63, Falls Church, Va., Oct. 19, 2023. A Phi Delta Theta member, Faga worked for the U.S. government in intelligence, as assistant secretary of the Air Force and director of the National Reconnaissance Office. He retired from MITRE Corp., as president and CEO. He was a member of the Asa Packer and Tower societies. He also volunteered with his class and as a member of the Rossin Advisory Council. His parent, Edgar Faga, was a member of the Class of 1926. Marshall L. Phelps ’63, Tustin, Calif., July 20, 2023. Phelps was a Phi Sigma Kappa member. During his banking career, he helped create the first Charge Account Program (CAP) in the United States. He also worked as a consultant and formed Growth Coach Concepts, an entrepreneurial consulting firm designed to help companies grow ethically and responsibly. His father, grandfather, and uncle were Lehigh graduates. Donald M. Jackson ’64, Littleton, Colo., July 11, 2023. Jackson was a Sigma Phi Epsilon member. He worked for Gulf Oil Corp., and was also a member of the Tower Society. George R. Riling ’64, Pittsburgh, Pa., March 6, 2023. Riling served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the U.S. Department of Energy. William Reed Bulota ’65, Maple Valley, Wash., May 2, 2023. Warren R. Pilon ’65, Louisville, Ken., Nov. 27, 2023. Pilon worked as a member of the executive team for Capital Holding and Providian, doing corporate development, finance, and risk analysis. His child, Jennifer Pilon, is a member of the Class of 1992. Daniel M. Pultz ’65, Pittsburgh, Pa., Nov. 22, 2023. A Theta Delta Chi member, Pultz served in the U.S. military in Vietnam. He founded and led several companies, including Nettec Services (later Advanticom). John A. Sawyer ’65, Hilton Head, S.C., Dec. 4, 2023. Sawyer was a Phi Gamma Delta member and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He worked as a commodities trader in New York. William L. Trace ’65, Milford, Va., June 28, 2021. A Delta Upsilon member, Trace worked in sales. Glenn A. Wells ’65, Mt. Lebanon, Pa., Sept. 15, 2023. Wells worked for U.S. Steel as a metallurgist before becoming a real estate investor. His child, Christian Wells, is a member of the Class of 1991. Anthony E. Bolyn Jr. ’66, Plainville, Mass., Aug. 30, 2023. A veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, Bolyn was a marketing executive at the Congoleum Corporation and Boston Thermal, as well as the owner of Mustard Seed Landscaping. His parent, Anthony Bolyn ’36, and sibling, Philip Bolyn ’68, are members of the Lehigh family. Thomas L. Trevethan ’66, Ann Arbor, Mich., Oct. 24, 2023. Trevethan worked for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He also wrote two books. Mark L. Karlberg ’67, Becket, Mass., Dec. 12, 2023. George J. Conly III ’68, Lower Saucon Township, Pa., Oct. 13, 2023. A Lambda Chi Alpha member, Conly served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He owned and operated TriCity Marble for 35 years. Herbert N.
