Special Collections Exhibition Words of theYears Special Collections curated, designed, and installed the Words of the Years exhibition, a selection of interesting or unusual dictionaries from our collections, on display at Linderman Library. Visitors had the opportunity to see a first edition of Noah Webster's A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language (1806) and an exceptionally scarce 1862 copy of Hori Tatsnoskay’s A Pocket Dictionary of the English and Japanese Language. Open Mic with Dr. Robb Fillman A reading and an open mic in Lucy’s Café, hosted by Lehigh alumnus and award winning poet Robb Fillman, led off Lehigh Libraries’ 2022 National Poetry Month celebrations. Dr. Fillman read from his latest book, House Bird (Terrapin Books, 2022), before handing the mic over to the more than 25 students who read their own original poetry or recited their favorite poems. Julie Phillips Brown: The Adjacent Possible reading and lecture The Friends of the Lehigh Libraries sponsored a virtual reading and lecture by award-winning poet Julie Phillips Brown who read from her latest poetry collection, The Adjacent Possible (Green Writers Press, 2021), for which she won the 2019 Hopper Poetry Prize. When not writing poetry, Professor Phillips Brown teaches English literature at Virginia Military Institute. Understanding Viral Media through Chinese poetry In collaboration with the Modern Languages and Literatures Department, the English Department, and the Asian Studies Program, Lehigh Libraries co-sponsored a campus visit by Dr. Nick Admussen, Associate Professor of Chinese Literature and Culture at Cornell University. During his visit, Professor Admussen delivered a lecture that explored the impact of social media transmission on a poem using the examples of two well known Chinese poems and led a workshop for students on writing poetry in two languages. Poem in Your Pocket Day Poem In Your Pocket Day was celebrated in conjunction with Professor Admussen’s visit as Lehigh Libraries distributed cards of Chinese language poetry with English translations.
