He made a 40-year career at PPL, retiring as the director of procurement. He went on to work at and teach day trading on the stock market in his retirement. Mr. Inglese was a very active alumnus volunteer. He was integral to planning Class of 1953 reunion events for many years and, for his service, won the Alumni Award in 1978 and the Robert A. Harrier Award in 1991. His grandchild, Jacquelyn (Labert) Febbo, is a member of the Class of 2004. Thomas P. O’Neill ’51, Egg Harbor, N.J., March 5, 2023. A veteran of the U.S. Navy and Kappa Alpha brother, Mr. O’Neill made his career as a stockbroker. Bernard R. Spirk Sr. ’51, Bethlehem Township, Pa., Jan. 29, 2023. Mr. Spirk served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He made his career with the Bethlehem Steel Company. William G. Evans ’52, Punta Gorda, Fla., Dec. 22, 2022. David A. Garden ’52, Saint Helena, Calif., Jan. 17, 2023. Mr. Garden was a Sigma Phi brother and a member of The Brown and White and soccer team. He worked in the steel industry for many years before returning to his family property, where he became a cattle rancher. His grandchild, Amy Mastromonaco, is a member of the Class of 2009. James N. Land Jr. ’52, New Providence, N.J., April 4, 2023. Mr. Land was a Sigma Nu brother, as well as a member of the soccer and lacrosse teams. He served in the U.S. Air Force before joining First Boston Corporation. Later, he started a consulting practice. Richard D. Schmidt Jr. ’52, Mesa, Ariz., Feb. 26, 2023. Mr. Schmidt was president of Delta Upsilon fraternity and team manager for the 1950 undefeated football team. He sold hospital communications equipment for Executone. He was very active in regional groups for Lehigh wherever he lived. Lehigh was honored to present him with the Alumni Award in 2017. His child, Curtis Schmidt ’75, and grandchildren, Joshua Harriman ’12, Jill Neary ’12 and Alivia Gould ’16, are members of the Lehigh family. William H. Walters ’52, Attica, N.Y., Oct. 18, 2022. Harold B. Snyder ’53, Tuscon, Ariz., Nov. 19, 2022. A Chi Phi brother, Mr. Snyder served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked in commercial real estate. Kenneth J. Wolbach ’53, Allentown, Pa., April 3, 2023. Mr. Wolbach served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as the plant manager at Lawsilk Ribbon Corporation in Bethlehem. William T. Collins Jr. ’54, Northport, Mich., March 5, 2023. A veteran of the U.S. Army and Delta Phi brother, Mr. Collins worked as an automotive engineer and is credited as being the father of the Pontiac GTO. He also led the development of the Delorean concept car of “Back to the Future” fame. Marvin E. Hahn ’54, Cicero, N.Y., April 10, 2023. Mr. Hahn served in the U.S. Army Air Corps after World War II. He made his career with General Electric in the military electronics department. Eugene D. Juba ’54, Dunmore, Pa., April 19, 2023. A founding brother of Delta Chi, Mr. Juba served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as an industrial engineer, most notably for Harshaw Chemical and The Shepherd Chemical Company. His child, David Juba, is a member of the Class of 1984. William R. Kinkead ’54, Green Valley, Ariz., April 15, 2023. A Theta Chi brother, Mr. Kinkead served in the U.S. Air Force before going on to a career as a commercial pilot for TWA. His child, W. Douglas Kinkead, was a member of the Class of 1983. He also volunteered with the LUAA Board of Directors. Edward Small ’54, Alden, N.Y., May 14, 2022. Mr. Small served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Committee and retired as the director. Wilbur J. Stiles ’54, Tallahassee, Fla., April 1, 2023. A baseball player and Delta Phi brother, Dr. Stiles taught at Florida State University. George J. Wehn ’54, Upper St. Clair, Pa., March 3, 2023. Lt. Col. Wehn served in the U.S. Air Force for nearly 30 years. He was a Sigma Nu brother and also ran the family commercial carpet distribution company, George Wehn & Sons, for 40 years. Robert C. Bertolet ’55, Ridgeland, Miss., April 14, 2023. Mr. Bertolet served in the U.S. Army. He worked for PanAmerican Petroleum before becoming an independent petroleum geologist. He was a founding owner of Energy Drilling Company. He was also a member of the Tower Society. John K. Sellers ’55, Lancaster, Pa., Jan. 21, 2023. Mr. Sellers was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a Theta Chi brother. He worked for ALCOA for over 40 years, retiring as technical consultant for ALCOA’s major products in the Middle Atlantic States and Eastern Canada. Elwood Silfies ’55, Bethlehem, Pa., Feb. 10, 2023. Mr. Silfies was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He had a 30-year career with Mack Trucks. Robert E. Balestier ’56, Uniontown, Pa., Feb. 22, 2023. Mr. Balestier was a Lambda Chi Alpha brother. Robert W. Giovacco ’56, Clifton, N.J., Jan. 3, 2023. John R. Leyon ’56, Lincoln, R.I., Nov. 20, 2022. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Leyon was an Alpha Sigma Phi brother and a member of the track and swim teams and the Glee Club. He had a corporate career that spanned more than 45 years. He also managed his own financial consulting business for 20 years. Richard A. Valentine ’56, Charlestown, R.I., March 17, 2022. A Kappa Alpha brother, Mr. Valentine worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a flight operations engineer. Ben W. Albert ’57, Laguna, Calif., Dec. 12, 2022. Mr. Albert had a varied career, including 20 years as an aerospace engineer with the Sandia Corp. and owning and operating clothing stores in Austin, Texas. James B. Gardner ’57, Moorestown, N.J., March 12, 2023. A Kappa Sigma brother, Mr. Gardner was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked for Union Camp Corp. and was the assistant comptroller at his retirement. Philip G. Leigh ’57, Tampa, Fla., March 11, 2023. Mr. Leigh was a football player and Sigma Nu brother. He worked for the International Nickel Company. Joseph F. Reardon Jr. ’57, Davidson, N.C., April 7, 2023. A Delta Upsilon brother, Ret. Col. Reardon served in the active and reserve U.S. Air Force for over 30 years. He spent his career in manufacturing and retired from Pfizer. Donald B. Scarl ’57, Glen Cove, N.Y., March 13, 2023. Dr. Scarl was a Tau Delta Phi brother and member of the Marching 97. He taught and did research in optics and high-energy physics for 30 years at Cornell University and Polytechnic University. He authored multiple editions of the book “How to Solve Problems” to help college freshmen succeed in physics. Mahlon B. Simon Jr. ’57, Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 20, 2023. Mr. Simon was a Pi Lambda Phi brother, editor-in-chief of The Brown and White and a member of the Epitome yearbook staff. He worked as the president of Palley Simon Life and Benefits Corp. He was a very involved alumnus, volunteering as a fundraiser and in his class leadership for decades. For his
