Summer Bulletin 2023

60 | LEHIGH ALUMNI BULLETIN | CLASS NOTES The fried kelp needs help, as per Yelp! Fred Glick is now president of operations with San Diego’s OMG Hospitality Group. Fred also serves on the state board of directors of the California Restaurant Association and California Restaurant Foundation. In all of Fred’s food industry roles, his favorite food item: the drumstick, baked with 97 herbs and spices. No more “counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike” (Paul Simon) for Steve and Sara (Field) Czarecki, as they left Mendham for Southport, N.C. While Steve just retired, Sara started a new job as director of sales for Mosaic Data Science, selling AI consulting. Working from home allows Sara to continue to passionately share her love of wellness and gardening, as she reports her Juice Plus Tower Garden is sprouting in her new backyard. For sure, there will be no AIconjured-up tomatoes in her garden! Grabbing the swagger stick from Billy Wilder, Steve and Brenda (Mullen) Sampiere decided “You Can’t Take It With You” and took their four kids (plus three significant others) to Tuscany for biking, hiking, wine-ing and cooking classes! Miami-based Tony Planos recently reunioned with his 455 Montclair Ave. housemates in Antigua and Guatemala (I first thought it was a hotel party, going from Antigua to Guatemala but learned otherwise). Tony double-downed on his trip to Antigua and explored retirement options, though consulting in the energy (lower ratio carbon energy transition) balancing space remains his current focus. They weren’t in Austria to smell the Edelweiss, though they enjoyed the blossoms of snow (quasi-Rodgers & Hammerstein)—Carol Hostert and Robert Kalmey skied at Seefeld in Tirol. Last fall, they cruised the western Med (Rome, Barcelona, Mallorca and Corsica) and plan a northern European cruise this autumn. When not skiing and seeing, Robert is “playin’ in a travelin’ band” (CCR), as he plays guitar in a rock-n-roll cover band, appearing at SoCal bars and festivals. “Hey, kid, rock and roll, Rock on, ooh my soul.” (David Essex) “Until next time, face to face, I’ll be thinkin’ on you.” (Courtney Marie Andrews) ’87 Laura M. D’Orsi, 26 Falcon Ridge Circle, Holmdel, NJ 07733. (732) 241-5229 (H); lauramdorsi@yahoo.com Roger Lewis currently lives in Maryland, with brief stints in Atlanta and Sarasota. He has been married almost 30 years, and his wife is a semi- retired physician. Roger’s son is a Gates Foundation-supported Millennium Scholar, currently in his junior year at Penn State studying biomedical engineering and nanotechnology. After receiving a master’s degree in architecture from The Georgia Institute of Technology in 1990, Roger spent many years commuting to Alaska, the Midwest and West Coast, working on medical and aviation building projects. He is licensed to practice architecture in all jurisdictions of the U.S. Currently, he oversees the construction and renovation program for the Air Traffic Organization of the Federal Aviation Administration, headquartered in Washington, D.C. He hopes to retire from the FAA in the next three years, with intentions of focusing on residential architecture design and small commercial projects, as well as his hobbies of playing the saxophone (jazz), traveling and auto racing. It was wonderful to hear from Roger and hear about his life! Michelle (Marcil) Biggs has been getting together with her Lehigh crew for at least one long weekend a year, skiing for the past 10 years. Michelle lives in Littleton, Colo., but is moving to Dublin, Ireland. Michelle retired from Wells Fargo. The group includes Michelle, John Iljas, Glenn Dolan, Nancy (Smith) Biddle and Pete Biddle and Chris “Panama” Jackman. John Iljas is a vascular surgeon and lives in Ann Arbor, Mich., with his wife. Glenn Dolan is a personal injury attorney and lives in Manhattan with his wife. Glenn has his own firm with a few other partners. Nancy and Pete Biddle live in Collegeville, Pa., where Nancy has her own graphic design company and Pete is an engineer with Oracle. Chris “Panama” Jackman lives in Castle Pines, Colo., with his wife. He recently retired from Lockheed Martin. The whole group has kids all over the country. Michelle informed me about the death of Mark Miksis, who passed away after a six-year battle with colon cancer in August 2022. Mark graduated from Lehigh as an engineer. According to his obituary, after graduation, “Mark moved to Maryland and began his career with Martin Marietta, continuing to build his education with a master’s of engineering program at Johns Hopkins University. With an M.S. degree in 1990, Mark jumped at an opportunity in the growing field of computer technologies, landing a technical design position with Cypress Semiconductor in California’s Silicon Valley. “While in the Bay Area, Mark achieved a pilot’s license, becoming an owner/operator of a Grumman single propeller airplane. … Mark moved to Huntington Beach in southern California by the late ’90s, working in technical sales and helping friends with a wine business. … “Mark had become an avid runner while living out west and focused a fair amount of his energy on the sport during his illness. It gave him milestones to achieve, benchmarks for his health and a means for his friends and family to cheer him on through it all. “Beginning in 2016, Mark persevered through bi-monthly chemotherapy treatments at Phoenixville Hospital’s Cancer Center. While the treatments and side effects were hardly joyous, he often remarked how the center and its staff were a beacon of hope and humanity. Mark wished for anyone so inclined after his passing to please make a donation to the Patient Assistance Fund in his memory so that others might be able to experience the same hope and kindness. Phoenixville Hospital Cancer Center c/o Patient Assistance Fund, 842 Main St., Phoenixville, PA 19460.” Thank you everyone for writing with your updates. Hope you all have a wonderful fall. ’88 Guest columnist: Jillian (Spitalnik) Winoker, jkwinoker@gmail.com Hope everyone came to Lehigh for our 35th reunion June 8-11. The Reunion Committee worked diligently to plan the best reunion yet, and we appreciated all their efforts. We know the Class of 1988…. We will continue our legacy of being the class with the best reunion attendance and the class that raises the most money for Lehigh. Remember, we are of Lehigh fame, and we took a lot of the “fun” with us. We were the last class to experience all of Lehigh’s finest traditions: beer trucks at orientation, sunrise cocktails, unrestricted pub nights, bed races, IFC cocktails, Ho Chi Minh and, of course, the last Lehigh-Lafayette game at Taylor Stadium. I could go on and on! We had no Ubers, no cellphones, no Find My Friends, yet we always knew where to go, who would be there and how to find our way! Living in New York City, I am fortunate to see many classmates. Stacy Seiden Siegel recently accepted the position as EVP chief legal officer at J.Crew and is splitting her time
