58 | LEHIGH ALUMNI BULLETIN | CLASS NOTES retired and never getting bored. Hitting the gym every day and meeting new people seems to be our job now, along with nine months of days at the beach. (I’ll bet that dream job in the steel industry doesn’t sound so good now!!) Looking forward to a cruise this winter and planning a trip to Yellowstone or The Keys or Bermuda … or maybe another cruise. We have lots to be thankful for and to look forward to. “My sister, Karen (Talhelm) Knauer ’78 and her hubby, Paul Knauer ’76, are enjoying retired life and their two grandchildren. My dad, Don Talhelm ’59, a retired professor of EE, still attends football and basketball games at LU at the age of 90.” Sounds great, Kevin. I’ll text you photos of molten steel flowing like water. Ha! Won’t see those waves at the beach! Paul Maxwell is alive and kicking in Charlotte, N.C. Paul and Ruth are the parents of two adult sons. One lives in North Carolina, and the other lives in Illinois. Semi-retired, Paul plays music at the local honky tonks over those long weekends for libations. He didn’t say if they let him wear his kilt and play his bagpipes. He would like to team up with his son and open a beer garden once retirement fully sets in. He’ll be tripping to the Grand Caymans later this year and meeting up with the Hutleys in the Adirondacks to see Dead & Company during their Final Tour. There! I knew it. You’re reading about your classmates, yet you haven’t emailed me or picked up the phone to share a little about you with me and other dedicated classmates. ’82 John P. Belardo, 152 Berkeley Circle, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920. (973) 425-8755 (B); jbelardo@ mdmc-law.com. On Facebook, like “Lehigh University Class of 1982.” Beth (Leenov) Margerison advises that her daughter, Sarah, was recently married in Lancaster, Pa. Her husband, Lee Margerison ’80, walked her down the aisle. Beth Margerison, sister of Lee, also attended. Sarah’s grandfather, Richard Margerison ’53, was also there for the wedding celebration. Rich Schlauch brings the sad news that after 85 years, Pete’s Hot Dogs—famous for all those late-night inebriated Greekers – has permanently shut its doors. Rich is enjoying his retirement after a career in sales and their four grandchildren, all under the age of 4. Rich’s daughter, Betsy (Schlauch) Hritz ’09, is employed at Just Born Candy. His daughter, Maggie Carpenter, who attended Penn State University, is with ADP. His son, Wes, works locally for the township. Rich still lives at the family homestead in Breinigsville, Pa. My fraternity brother Matthew Peck writes to ask, “I’m not dead yet. Does that count?” Yes, Matt, and you get bonus points. Hit the Pop-O-Matic and three shots of Wild Turkey. I had a long telephone call with David Kynor, who lives with his wife in Stratford, Vt., and still teaches engineering part time at Dartmouth College. Dave and I both have second houses close to each other in Maine. Dave is building a permanent home in Southport Island near Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Gregory Pichler and Mike Quaranta ’85 recently collaborated on a music video titled “By Any Which Way You Can” that Greg composed on Jan. 22 of this year while watching the football game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills. Mike and Greg, and other Tau Epsilon Phi brothers, plan to perform the song as part of throw-back material at this year’s Lehigh-Lafayette football game. Greg lives in Bethesda, Md. Find Greg’s group and his tremendous new song at progressiveshamanists.com. I had lunch with Christopher Palazzi, of Zeta Psi, at the Station in Mountain Lakes, N.J., where he still lives with his wife, Nancy. Chris had a long, varied and successful career in real estate and banking. He is now chief development officer for Morris Habitat for Humanity and is doing some tremendous work there with creative financing and development to build much-needed affordable housing in the area. Nancy continues her career with Max Mara. Chris and Nancy both grew up in Mountain Lakes but didn’t meet until after he graduated from Lehigh. They have four children, three boys and a girl: Jack, 26, a Providence College graduate, working for Valley Bank as a commercial lender; Nick, 25, with his undergrad and MBA from Fairfield University, working for Withum as an accountant; Matt, 22, a senior at University of Pennsylvania and captain of the UPenn men’s lacrosse team; and Kendall, 19, a freshman at Syracuse University studying in the Newhouse School of Communication and The Whitman School of Business. Chris stays in touch with his Zeta Psi fraternity brothers, especially his roommate Tom Crawford. Tom’s daughter, Meghan, got married in 2022 and had a spectacular wedding and reception at Port Liberte, with the New York City skyline as a backdrop. Also, Pete Morales keeps all Zeta Psi brothers in touch, arranging their annual holiday lunch and promoting events for the brothers to attend. Pete’s the glue keeping them together and the straw stirring the drink. Joan and I recently purchased a beach condo on Anastasia Island in St. Augustine, Fla. Old and cold is no way to go through life. In February, Stan King and his wife, Ingrid Sue, came by for a long weekend. Keep the emails coming. ’83 Nancy Liu Freedman, nancyliulehigh83@gmail.com Happy summer, Class of ’83! It was so great to see so many of you at our 40th reunion. (Okay, it has not happened as of writing this, but I am excited to see many of you!) I will provide reunion news from classmates who attended in the next column. News from the inbox Dave Thomson writes: “Dave Yannarell and I went ‘Back to the (Lehigh) Classroom’ on Oct. 20 in the new Health, Science & Technology building and enjoyed the day sponsored by the Senior Alumni Council. We are both retired at this point. “Dave and wife Jill joined our family (me, Wendy Littner Thomson, daughters Sarah ’13 (with husband Michael) and Abigail ’18 (with boyfriend James Mauk ’19) tailgate at Lehigh-Lafayette No. 158. My track teammate Jim Driscoll and his wife, Diane (Owczarek) Driscoll, found a parking space next to us and joined our party. This year was my 40th Lehigh-Lafayette, while Wendy likely is over 50 at this point. “Prior to the NCAA Regionals in November, I hosted the women’s and men’s cross-country teams for dinner at a local pizzeria. Coach Covert (92 years old) and his wife, Carol, were able to join us for dinner and a fun game of Lehigh trivia. “While we likely live the closest to the Lehigh campus, we hope classmates will plan to attend Reunion 2023.” Dianne (Goetz) Yamin’s husband, Robert, writes: “Hon. Dianne E. Yamin, probate judge for the District of Danbury for the past 32 years, was unanimously elected by her fellow jurists and sworn in as president of the National College of Probate Judges at their annual conference. “Also, in October, Judge Yamin received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service from the American Dream Foundation, and in November, Judge Yamin received the Heart of Women
