Spencer ’47, Shelbourne, Vt., Jan. 22, 2022. Mr. Spencer owned and was CEO of Land Air Express of New England. Ira Birnbaum ’48, Scarsdale, N.Y., Nov. 26, 2021. Mr. Birnbaumwas a Tau Delta Phi brother, member of the swimming and soccer teams and a player with the Mustard & Cheese. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army during WorldWar II. He was general manager of UA Columbia Cablevision and is credited with the beginnings of cable television inWestchester County, N.Y. Norman A. Haft ’48, Morrisville, N.C., May 9, 2021. Mr. Haft served in the U.S. Army before attending Lehigh. He was a brother of Pi Lambda Phi and played with the Mustard & Cheese Drama Society. He practiced law, owned a sporting goods store, served as mayor of Adrian and launched a small business administration in Bermuda. His daughter, Wendy (Haft) Kuhn, is a member of the Class of 1975. David Hollingsworth ’48, Wilmington, Del., Jan. 16, 2022. A Delta Sigma Phi brother, Mr. Hollingsworth was also a veteran of the U.S. Army during the KoreanWar. Professionally, he rose through the ranks at Hercules, retiring as CEO and chairman. He was a 1991 laureate of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. His Lehigh legacy includes his brother, John Hollingsworth ’49, and his children, Andy Hollingsworth ’80, ’98G and Carol A. (Delia) Hollingsworth ’80, and Peter Hollingsworth ’81. Sidney H. Mayer Jr. ’48, Needham, Mass., Dec. 31, 2021. Mr. Mayer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He began his working career as a professional magician and stage actor. He went on to start his own business writing and producing corporate audiovisual communications. Wayne D. Fegely ’49, Sykesville, Md., Jan. 27, 2022. Mr. Fegely served in the U.S. Navy duringWorldWar II. He spent 43 years working for Westinghouse (nowNorthrop Grumman), retiring in 1992 as the technical director. During his tenure hemade notable contributions to defense technology, including the introduction of Pulse Doppler Fire Control Radar and the Electronically Agile Radar. Kenneth G. Job ’49, Rochelle Park, N.J., April 13, 2022. Mr. Job served in the U.S. Army during the KoreanWar. He worked as a professional engineer, land surveyor and professional planner. He was president of the family frm, Job and Job Consulting. Melvin S. Saunders ’49, Staford, Texas, Jan. 19, 2022. Mr. Saunders served in the U.S. Army Air Force duringWorld War II. He was president of Price Hall his senior year. He received anM.S. in engineering from the University of Michigan in 1952. He retired fromRCA/GE as a sectionmanager in 1987. R. Bryce Tatge ’49, Clifton Park, N.J., April 19, 2022. Mr. Tatge was a member of Tau Beta Pi. He worked for General Electric for many years and was active in writing both national and international noise standards. He was a director and vice president of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering and held fve patents. 1950s Henry Ahrenhold III ’50, Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 27, 2022. Mr. Ahrenhold was a Sigma Phi Epsilon brother. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the KoreanWar. He made his career as an engineer in the paper industry, retiring fromGeorgia Pacifc. Robert E. Barry ’50, Ann Arbor, Mich., Jan. 26, 2022. Dr. Barry was a veteran of the KoreanWar. He had several careers, working in rocket design, teaching at a university and consulting. David H. Grifn ’50, Bronxville, N.Y., Feb. 11, 2022. A veteran of the U.S. Navy duringWorld War II, Mr. Grifn was a Delta Sigma Phi brother. He worked as the president and COO of Grifn International, Inc., a construction dewatering frm. He developed water purifcation practices and technologies, which have become the industry standard. Julius S. Kovacs ’50, East Lansing, Mich., Feb. 12, 2022. Dr. Kovacs taught physics at the University of Michigan. Hugh G. Oldach ’50, Vero Beach, Fla., March 16, 2022. Mr. Oldach was a brother of Alpha Chi Rho and served as fraternity president. He was amember of the Lehigh Glee Club, Sailing Club and Flying Club. He worked in pure engineering withMoore Products, then later in food services (in a family egg-distributing business) and with Anheuser Busch. His brother, William Oldach Jr., was amember of the Class of 1947. Denis L. Ramball ’50 ’55, Cinnaminson, N.J., Jan. 15, 2022. Elmer H. Adams ’51, Massapeaqua, N.Y., March 2, 2022. Mr. Adams was a Phi Delta Theta brother andmember of the tennis team. He worked in banking. George T. Esherick ’51, Bethesda, Md., Feb. 1, 2022. Mr. Esherick was a veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy. He was a Phi Gamma Delta brother and a member of the track team. He worked as a government afairs representative with U.S. Steel for 25 years before transitioning to the American Iron and Steel Institute until his retirement. Andrew N. Wiegner Jr. ’51, Allentown, Pa., April 21, 2022. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Wiegner worked for the former Western Electric, AT&T and Lucent before retiring as the director of engineering at the Winston-Salem, N.C., facility after 39 years of service. His children, Gary Wiegner ’76 and Kim (Wiegner) Wall ’87, are members of the Lehigh family. Merlyn F. Wolcott ’51, Raleigh, N.C., Jan. 18, 2021. Robert C. Carson ’52, Salisbury, Pa., Dec. 30, 2021. Mr. Carson was retired fromBethlehem Steel Corporation. David A. De Graaf ’52, Hendersonville, N.C., April 2, 2022. Mr. De Graaf was a member of the Glee Club as a student. He worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories and its subsidiary, Bellcomm. Based on his early work with missile guidance systems and telemetry, he developed the trajectory simulations that guided the Apollo astronauts to the moon and back and supported the Skylab missions. He also worked to develop aspects of the UNIX operating system. He planned and developed a large network for the ’84 Summer Olympics.
