Summer Bulletin

N O T E S From Jefrey Marshall: “Medical school (Hahnemann ’86), zig-zagged around the USA (pediatric residency, two years of practice in California; anesthesia residency and faculty positions at the University of Michigan, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, La., and staf at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif.) before ending up back where I started in Berks/Lebanon, Pa. Divorced, raised two kids (both now out of college and independent), cared for my parents, found some adventures, hopefully acquired some wisdom, picked up a lot of stories, presently restoring an old cottage.” Ken Shriber, managing director and CEO of Petroleum Equity Group in Chappaqua, N.Y., emails, “Anyway, my news is that my youngest daughter has chosen Lehigh and was accepted to be a member of the entering Class of 2026 this fall. I did not push her; it was her decision. So, the Lehigh tradition continues. My brother, Mitchell Shriber, also is an alumnus of ’79. My company also continues to accelerate, even though the pandemic. Our biggest M&A deals over our 12-year history were in 2021.” Gregory Pichler brings news of his musical achievements: “I attended the College of Arts and Science. Robert Kowtko, who attended the College of Engineering, and I are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the formation of the musical group, The Progressive Shamanists, which we formed in our senior year in the spring semester of 1982. With percussionist Robert Prigge ’85, we performed at the German House at 212Warren Square on April 2, 1982. We also performed at several outdoor venues, largely at Warren Square. That semester we practiced vigorously at a vacation residence in Tanglewood, Pa., near Greentown, Pa., that was owned by Kowtko’s father. Since the spring semester at Lehigh University, we continue to perform and record original music. In 1983 we added music major candidate, Keith Swanson, who attended the College of Arts and Science at Lehigh University from 1980 through 1981. Swanson went on to play in the professional Irish folk group Barley Juice, which regularly performs at Irish festivals across the country. Since our formation in 1982, we have developed the equivalent of three or four albums of original music, spanning four decades. On Jan. 30, 2022, I launched a website, progressiveshamanists.com, to share our musical history, our legacy of original music, upcoming events and our newmaterial. We continue to meet at a member’s vacation residence in Germantown, Pa., and perform the same songs we frst composed and performed starting in 1982.” Gregory is the guitarist. Robert Jones ’85 is the keyboardist. Well, until next time, that’s about it. Keep the emails coming. ’83Nancy Liu Freedman, nancyliulehigh83@ gmail.com Happy summer, Class of ’83! I am happy to report that I received a few nice updates from our classmates over the past three months. I have promised them double my usual paycheck and an option for a hearty handshake in the future for their contributions. Benjamin Blinder gave me the full rundown: “I am still working for the U.S. afliate of Gattefossé, a French company established in 1880, entering my 12th year with them (four years back in the 1990s, then a long gap working for another company, and back with Gattefossé in the United States for my eighth year this time around). I am now the executive director, business operations, in charge of all business activities in the United States and Mexico for our two divisions, pharmaceuticals and personal care. I am involved with helping to develop growth strategies and directing the activities of our sales, marketing, laboratory and technical support teams within these two divisions. When I am not working, I serve on the board of trustees for the Verona (New Jersey) Public Library and play trumpet, fugelhorn and cornet for the Montclair Community Band. My wife, Karen (Moravian ’85), works as assistant controller for Scorpio USA, a shipping company, and volunteers with the Verona Rescue Squad. She is an EMT, the Thursday night lieutenant and, this year, was appointed as one of the two assistant chiefs of the rescue squad. Daughter Rachel (Lehigh ’16) was just promoted to technical service manager, running the application laboratory for Sytheon LTD, a personal care industry supplier of active ingredients.” Robin (Cohen) Hart took solace fromTampa’s defeat of the Eagles back in January by sending me her news, the most eventful being JimHart’s ofcial retirement fromAir Products/Versum/Merck KGAa. “The 5 4 | L E H I G H B U L L E T I N
