Summer Bulletin

N O T E S Ernie Brown. I was enrolled in mining engineering until we went on a feld trip to the anthracite region near Pottsville. That was enough for me, so I switched to business and graduated in 1956.” As an aside, I also enrolled as a mining engineering student but switched to chemical engineering. As a second aside, I am now the proud great-grandfather of identical twin boys. Maybe they will be Lehigh students to continue the tradition. Hope many of you came back to campus for our 67th Reunion on June 9-12. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and Lehigh. Reminder: This column is only as good as you make it! Send me some information about yourself and your adventures and exploits since leaving Old SouthMountain in 1955. ’56Bill Burgin, 534 W. Beechtree Lane, Wayne,PA 19087. (610) 688-7374 (H); w.burgin@ att.net As I write, plans are underway for our 65th Reunion (delayed one year), to be held June 9-12 at Lehigh. It promises to ofer a great time, with 42 classes assembling on campus for current and delayed reunions. It will be one of the largest reunion weekends in Lehigh’s history. Apart from the crowd, the Class of 1956 is invited to meet for a special cocktail party at the Saucon Valley Country Club, funded by the class treasury. Many thanks to class treasurer JimWhite for arranging the gathering. Meals and other favorite reunion events will take place on campus. I enjoyed a telephone visit with John Milnor, who plans to drive up to Bethlehem from Trinity, Fla., for the reunion. John, a Tower Society member, was privileged to meet Lehigh President Joseph J. Helble ’82 in early February, when he attended two alumni events held in Naples and Palm Beach, Fla. On a light note, John says his prized Lehigh tie was admired. John stays in touch with classmates Bill Diehl and Lee Fraivillig. I sadly report the recent death of a classmate: George L. Childs Jr. Ron Murray, with his wife, Judy, attended the mass and reception on Sept. 24, 2021, for George Childs, who died in Bronxville, N.Y., on Sept. 3. Judy and George’s wife, Lorraine (Raine), were friends and co-workers before their marriages to the Lehigh friends. George, a Tower Society member, held a B.S. degree from Lehigh and an MBA degree from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., earned in 2002. After a tour in the U.S. Army, George spent his career in fnance, founding the Condor Management Corporation in 1975 and remaining its head until his retirement in 2004. He was a varsity football and baseball player at Bronxville High School. At Lehigh, he was a member of Theta Delta Chi and held leadership roles in several campus groups, including serving as head cheerleader. Keeping “a positive outlook on life,” he became a devoted family man, avid golfer and oftseen driver of his Ford Mustang convertible. Our deep condolences go to Raine, their three sons, George III, Thomas and Raymond, and their families, including 10 grandchildren. Sigma Chi brother Lou Cianciulli reports that he and Nancy are doing well in their move to Uxbridge, Mass., where he looks forward to golf season. Be sure to see the photo of our class gift to Lehigh, a sturdy bench and plaque on campus near the Linderman Library, on the “In Celebration” page of this issue. And look for reunion news in the next issue of this Bulletin. ’57JamesWatson, 774HighviewDrive, Wyckof, NJ 07481. (201) 891-1246 (H); jwatson@ execsearchinc.net This should be a rather short column and come out after our 65th Reunion, held June 9-12, 2022. However, a later column in the winter will include all the Reunion news. I did receive an old photo from JohnMilnor ’56 of the combined reunion classes of 1955, 1956 and 1957 – must have been in 1964, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the school. Frankly, I just can’t remember this; however, I’m in the picture with 16 other stalwarts, including Howie Levitz, Al Olsen and others whom I can’t place. All young, mostly skinny guys with mostly skinny ties. Send me a note if you remember the event! Sadly, I have received an obituary notice of the passing of Keith Rust. After a short stint at Alcoa and the U.S. Army, Keith returned to Bethlehem to work for his father-in-law’s company, Roland & Roland, fromwhich he retired as president and owner in 2017. Keith was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and had a successful football career as a punter and halfack. As an alumnus, Keith was a great supporter of Lehigh over the years. He was a past member of the Board of Trustees and past president of the Alumni Association and was active with the L.U. Athletic Partnership and the football programs. Keith and his wife, Jill, were fxtures at all Lehigh home football games, tailgating at the Rust Family Football Pavilion near the stadium. I have a trip planned in the fall to visit JimHaas, who is still living in Barrington, R.I. Jim has restored his ’55 Porsche Speedster that I rode in back in ’56—my frst Porsche experience. Could never aford one, but I drove the VWBeetles back and forth to NYC for about 10 years—same designer. Jim is still an avid sailor and maintains two other Porsches, a ’64 SC and a ’57 Speedster. Jim also mentioned the passing of Chris Wilson ’59, his Sigma Phi brother and one of my dear freshman roommates in Tempo III. A great group of late applicants who needed rooms as all of the old dorms had been flled. It was a great experience—16 of us in an old Army Quonset hut, separated into rooms 8 feet high. Hope to see you in the fall at a few home football games and Princeton away on Saturday, Sept. 24. A great game and a great team. Write soon! ’58Bill Helfrich, 80 Southwick Drive, Orchard Park, NY 14127. (716) 662-7927 (H); bh7831@aol.com Not as many classmates are still 85 and alive, but most have hopefully graduated to 86. Anne and I had dinner with Dave Hecht ’60 at the Bufalo Sports Grill—yes, where we have the Lehigh-Lafayette telecasts. We had a discussion about the Craig Andersons we know. First, the Bufalo Sabres’ 40-year-old goalie who just won his 300th hockey match and, second, the Class of ’60 Craig Anderson who was my pitching teammate for Coach Tony Packer and Lehigh— what a fastball! Craig graduated to the St. Louis Cardinals and was a draft pick of the N.Y. Mets. He won both games of the Mets’ frst winning doubleheader! Dave enjoys boxing sessions, which help him cope with his Parkinson’s and problems. Ed Delany just got great news that his lung cancer is improving—no more infusions and only three-month reviews. He is talking about returning to the ski slopes! But he did have some sad news that Dean Boyce is now under hospice care in DelRay Beach, Fla. Also, Larry Walsky died while he and Priscilla were living in Highland House inWyomissing, Pa. S UMM E R 2 0 2 2 | 4 1
