LEHIGH DISPATCH Editor’s note: Welcome to Lehigh Dispatch, where you can fnd out what your fellow alums are up to. Thanks to our dedicated correspondents for the work you do to keep our extended Lehigh community together. Please send Class Notes to your class correspondent, or, if unsure of the class to which the news applies, send to classnotes@lehigh.edu. ’43DawnMacAllister ’85 , daughter of TomMacAllister ’43, (540) 424-9436 (H); bunpanic@yahoo.com ’51Dick Allen, 15010 Shell Point Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33908. (239) 243-0969 (H); dickelise2@gmail.com By the time you read this, we will have had our 70th-plus-one Reunion, which will be covered in the next edition. I received a lovely note from Steve Mitchell, which I’ve included in its entirety below. “Dear Dick, It’s hard to compress 70 years into a few paragraphs. “I went to work after graduation with New Jersey Zinc Company at the world-famous FranklinMine in Franklin, N.J.; this included the Sterling Hill Mine. “My work experience included an assignment in Copperopolis, Calif., at a mined-out gold mine. We explored the surrounding area for gold-bearing ore. I was transferred to Friedensville, Pa., to develop a new underground mine. This is just over the SouthMountain in Lehigh County. “After 20 years in the industry, I changed jobs and went to work for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This involved mine inspections and enforcement of new health and safety standards. “I was involved in the rescue of 93 miners [trapped] at the Sunshine Silver Mine fre; [only] two miners survived. “I met and married my wife in the town of Franklin, and we enjoyed 65 years of married life. During that time, we traveled extensively on the eastern half of the country with our fraternal activities. We have enjoyed relatively good health throughout our married lives. I am still able to enjoy life on a limited basis. “I attended Princeton High School and the Hun School before applying to Lehigh. I was involved with the football and track programs in high school and prep school. “At Lehigh, I was on the freshman football team, which eventually became the 1950 undefeated and untied team. “Sincerely, Steve Mitchell ’51” ’52Bill Erdman, (407) 644-0391; 1171 Willa Vista Trail, Maitland, Fla., 32751 wce96@seeoursite.org; seeoursite.org/lehigh Dick Schmidt wrote on Jan. 13, 2022, “I just learned that Pat Moran died about six weeks ago. More later as I get the details.” Six weeks would put it near the beginning of December 2021. As of the column deadline, I have received no other details. Pat was the mainstay of our correspondence over the years and will be missed by those of us who were blessed knowing him. In February, Bob Hoyt sent a picture of John Seville, taken in the advanced Alzheimer’s disease unit in York, Pa. You can see John’s picture on our website, seeoursite.org/ lehigh#Seville. Unfortunately or fortunately, we did not receive any other news these past several months. “Unfortunately,” because we have nothing to write about concerning our active classmates. “Fortunately,” because all the news I have received so far is about two classmates who are no longer active. By the time this is printed in the Alumni Bulletin, our 70th Reunion, June 9-12, will be history. Maybe we will receive some updates we can pass along to you. Otherwise, we are still dependent on you guys to write to us. I found a lot of white space in the column and no exciting news to fll it with. Kay and I are still active, and I’m still riding my bike almost every day. Please send me news for the next issue. ’53Herb Roemmele, herbertroem mele@gmail.com, 732-796-3013 Here I amagain as your class correspondent. Bob Guilda phoned from South Cleveland, Ohio. He reports being happily married for 60 years. After obtaining anMBA from the University of Akron in the mid- ’60s, he worked for Babcock & Wilcox in New York City and then moved to Ohio, where he worked for my old frm, Wells Fargo. He has fve children and can be reached at 330-745-8339. Bob is worried that Lehigh is becoming too liberal. Do others have that same concern? I also heard from an old friend, Ralph Bach, who graduated fromColumbia (N.J.) High School with many of us who went on to Lehigh. He had a good career, frst with GE, then teaching and research at NorthN O T E S eastern University in Boston for 22 years, then NASA Ames Research Center inMt. View, Calif., for 23 years. Since moving to California, he has been playing the trumpet with ensemble and combo jazz bands, riding his bike and enjoying life. He has a son inMarblehead, Mass., and a daughter in California. Emmett Clary has moved into a senior living facility in Winter Park, Fla. He is caring for his disabled wife, with two children living nearby who look after them. He is active in a “laid-back” Toastmasters Club that meets twice a month. His wife had a fall that disabled her, so she is not able to participate in any activities. Emmett said, and I quote, “We have to play the hand we are dealt, and I am happy that I have my health and can take care of her.” A very warmmessage that strikes home with many of us. Joe Workman advised that his ATO fraternity brother and close friend Ed Kearney died Feb. 17, after a long illness. Ed had a long list of accomplishments at Lehigh, including Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi. Joe tells me he has marveled at the outstanding flm reviews by our classmate Joe Morgenstern in every Friday edition of The Wall Street Journal. Joe announced his retirement on April 29 after 27 years. I am also sad to report a phone call I received just before this column was due. It was Dave Fisher’s wife saying Dave had died of complications from cancer. Dave was our class treasurer for many years and was active in class reunions, including our 65th in 2018. Finally, you probably know that the Lehigh president traditionally makes a winter swing through Florida visiting with alumni. I have hosted several of these in the past. This past February, I had a confict but did have the opportunity to have a separate lunch with Lehigh’s new president, Joseph S UMM E R 2 0 2 2 | 3 9
