36 | LEHIGH ALUMNI BULLETIN ’51 AND EARLIER Wes Wardell, (302) 998-7020; and associate, Lee Martucci ʼ82, leemartucci12@gmail.com, (602) 370-5496 Richard “Dick” Irwin Jr. is living well in Sewickley, Pa. He was an engineer with Alcoa near Pittsburgh for 36 years, retiring in the late 1980s. Dick, originally from Pittsburgh, joined the Army Air Corps after high school graduation in 1945. He was stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. In 1947, after leaving the service, Dick enrolled at Lehigh. There he was president of Delta Phi fraternity, a member of Pi Tau Sigma promoting high ideals of the engineering profession and a member of Tau Beta Pi for high-ranking men in engineering and science. He also was involved with the Spring Festival, a wonderful event held at Grace Hall. In the Fall 2025 Bulletin our story was about Canadian pilot Capt. A. Roy Brown, who is credited with shooting down the Red Baron. The question was whether Capt. Brown actually shot down Manfred von Richthofen and whether he visited Lehigh to talk about the confrontation. After searching in Lehigh’s archives, as well as other sources, no record was found that Capt. Brown visited Lehigh. As a result of this lack of evidence, we looked closely at Sydney MacGillvary Brown, professor of history for 20 years beginning in 1922. The search uncovered that Professor Brown, in his own right, was an ace RAF pilot during World War I. In the Fall 2025 column, we speculated that Weston Wardell Sr., a member of the Class of 1925, heard Professor Brown talk about the shooting down of the Red Baron. Previously in The Brown and White, Vol 51, No. 28 of 2 Feb 1944, page 4, it was stated that Professor Brown shot down the Red Baron.
