Stabler Report 2023

Favorite Lehigh tradition Although this is not an established tradition, I hope that the Spring Carnival hosted by University Productions will return every year. Hometown: South Plainfield, NJ College: College of Arts and Sciences Major: Statistics Why did you choose Lehigh? I initially applied to Lehigh after attending the virtual Diversity Achievers Program, where I met so many people that I consider close friends today and fell in love with the close-knit environment. I also participated in Lehigh University Student Scholars Institute. It helped me adjust to the college environment and opened doors to so many opportunities like Passport to Success, where I landed a virtual internship in Vietnam. After one semester, I decided to add a major in economics to my first major in statistics, which I consider one of the best decisions I have made so far. What is your favorite class or subject? Introduction to Statistical Reasoning and Analysis was my first actual statistics course at Lehigh. I was very excited to finally learn about something I am extremely passionate about in a small group with similar interests. The teaching assistant, Steven Berger, made learning R, a statistical programming language, fun and interesting. There was an extra credit assignment where we were given survey data and told to perform a regression analysis, which was an excellent way to apply what we learned in the classroom to real-life data. Even with one semester’s worth of introductory knowledge, I was still able to use R for a summer internship, thanks to Steven and Professor Wei-Min Huang. Interests outside the classroom: I consider myself a jack-of-all-trades. Over the pandemic, I picked up embroidery and designed a few shirts for friends and family. I also tried to expand into crocheting as I have seen people create cardigans and beanbag chairs on social media. I like to play board games and video games that require critical thinking. My favorite board game is Ticket to Ride, and one of the objectives on my bucket list is to own every variation of the game. A message from Diana: Thank you for making my education possible. I am the first in my immediate family to go to college and the first in my extended family to leave my home state of New Jersey for college. Without scholarships, coming to Lehigh would not have been possible. I am making the most out of my time here by double majoring in statistics and economics and being involved in multiple on-campus organizations such as the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers and Southeast Asia at Lehigh. Being able to not worry about finances helps me focus on my career aspirations to become an actuary. Thank you once again! DIANA NGUYEN
