Stabler Report 2023

Favorite Lehigh tradition My favorite Lehigh tradition is the Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry! Hometown: Brooklyn, NY College: College of Arts and Sciences Major: Predental Science Why did you choose Lehigh? I chose Lehigh to participate in the accelerated Combined-Degree Program in Dentistry with the UPenn School of Dental Medicine so I could be able to graduate within three years. I have no regrets about my choice, and I cannot imagine myself anywhere else. This summer, I participated in PURE (Photochemistry Undergraduate Research Experience), and I was able to experience things such as taking part in a research group, presenting at a conference, and also living off campus on my own for the first time. It excites me that Lehigh offers us a space to grow not only academically but also as a person. What is your favorite class or subject? Outside my major, I enjoy taking psychology and sociology courses. These classes offer a breath of fresh air from the hard sciences and labs I have to take. Psychology helps me learn why people think and behave the way they do, while sociology helps me be more observant about those around me and their interactions. I will always remember Introduction to sociology with Professor Danielle Lindemann. Even now, I think a lot about the discussions we held in that class. I learned so much about different perspectives, relationship dynamics, and more that I was able to apply to the world around me. I hope to take more of these thought-invoking courses during my time here at Lehigh. Interests outside the classroom: Outside the classroom, I enjoy spending time with friends, but I also value spending time alone to crochet and listen to R&B music. I also enjoy volunteering whether it be tutoring at Broughal Middle School or monitoring events with LUEMS (Lehigh University Emergency Medical Services). Lately, I’ve also been shadowing dentists around the area. A message from Rachel: As a low-income first-generation student, I did not always have the necessary resources to pursue the interests I have nor the flexibility to take advantage of all opportunities available to me. With the impact that COVID had on my family, my attendance at Lehigh was jeopardized, and I felt very worried. However, I am proud and extremely grateful to be part of an institution and community that tries to ensure financial circumstances will not hold me back from anything I wish to do forever. My gratitude cannot be emphasized enough, and I hope to be able to pay back my thankfulness later on to future Lehigh students. RACHEL JOH
