Stabler Report 2023

Favorite Lehigh tradition I was quite swept up in the excitement of the Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry. Hometown: Elysburg, PA College: College of Arts and Sciences Major: Philosophy and Political Science Why did you choose Lehigh? One of Lehigh University’s best characteristics is that it is an institution very much centered around research. It is very common to conceive of education as a one-sided experience in which an educator simply tells a student how to think or understand a given subject. Lehigh distinguishes itself by recognizing that there is far more to a robust education, providing many opportunities from an array of disciplines to engage in real, hands-on, experiential learning. Simply having these opportunities available allows Lehigh to foster a community of scholars who are passionate about their chosen disciplines and explore them in a depth that isn’t available elsewhere. What is your favorite class or subject? Of all the subjects at Lehigh, political science stands out as the subject that has most significantly captured my interest. I have been fascinated by politics since I was in middle school, and to have the opportunity to study it at a collegiate level has truly been an exciting undertaking. I had the pleasure of taking a course on the U.S. political system with Professor Brian Fife, whose method of incorporating student discussion in his teaching really allowed me to see the United States’ political culture and history through a number of lenses and perspectives that I had not understood or considered before. Interests outside the classroom: One thing I really enjoy is waking up early in the morning and running around Lehigh’s campus a few times. The fact that Lehigh’s campus is located on the side of a hill makes this somewhat challenging but worthwhile. Another activity that I have found a great amount of joy in is walking up to Mountaintop with my friends in the evening. It provides an excellent opportunity for deep discussion. A message from Scot: There are really no words with which I can adequately express my gratitude and thanks to scholarship donors like you who have given me the opportunity to participate in this academic community. Without your support, I would certainly not be where I am now, with access to the vibrant learning environment that Lehigh provides. So, to you, whose generosity has changed the lives of myself and of many students for the better, I offer my sincere thanks. SCOT DRESSLER
