Spring Bulletin 2022

S P R I N G 2 0 2 2 | 4 5 N O T E S This column highlights Lee Butz in his own words. Tome, what is impressive about Lee’s column is his decision to give back to the community in which he lives. We all have an obligation to future generations. “Dolly and I are doing well. I still go into the office every day, althoughmy son, Lehigh graduate Greg Butz ’79, is running our constructionmanagement company, and doing it very well. AlvinH. Butz, Inc., now has offices inHarrisburg, State College and Philadelphia, and we have been involved in projects inNaples, Fla., and NewYork City. The NewYork projects are a result of a partnership with Greg’s Lehigh classmate and basketball teammate, Mario Procida ’80. …Greg got hisMBA in ’81. I received an honorary doctorate in ’95. “Our company is sprinkled with Lehigh grads. Project executive TomDaniels ’76 recently retired. Current sterling employees: project executiveWendy Body ’85; senior project manager Kyle Collina ’07; and project engineersMike Duffy ’18, Randy Cruz ’17M.Eng. ’18 and Ryan Bonshak ’18. “I amdevoting a lot of time and resources to initiatives in the Allentown School District, which suffers from the circumstances of all urban districts. We started a construction company, run by students; founded a center-city baseball program; and are about to launch a program that promises employment to any student willing to learn the necessary skills. Hopefully, these initiatives will make a difference. “Congratulations and thanks to you for taking over from Bob Kiley, who did a great job. Lee” This is your chance to share how you are giving back. In a forthcoming column I’ll publish all the good things the Class of 1955 is doing to help their local communities. Your classmates would like to hear about what you are doing. Bring them on. ’56Bill Burgin, 534 W. Beechtree Lane, Wayne,PA 19087. (610) 688-7374 (H); w.burgin@ att.net It’s finally happening! Our 65th Reunion (now 66th year) will take place on campus June 9 to 12, 2022. Owing to previous cancellations because of the pandemic, 42 classes in all will be represented. Plans call for our class to be joined by fellow alumni from ’55 and ’57, with a class dinner supplied by Lehigh. A highlight for us will be checking out our Class of 1956 gift to Lehigh, an inscribed sturdy bench located near the Linderman Library. Enormous thanks go to the teamwhosemonths of work resulted in the installation of the bench. Fromthe class officers’ original vision to completion, credit goes to JimWhite, Arthur Anderman, Bill Burgin andLehigh’s Stephanie Fisher andBrent Stringfellow. The benchwas financed by partial use of our class funds. Don’tmiss it! Before the Holy Cross football game at Lehigh on October 30, EdHatfield ’55 organized a festive pre-game tailgate party. Joining Pinky and Ed were Hartley “Duke” King, Bruce Waechter, Harry Brooks ’59 and friendsMeredith Rapp, Wanda and Fred Sheriff, and Fred’s brother, Skipper Sheriff. Despite the team’s loss, the fans report a good time had by all. It was good to hear from Jason Brent, who reads this Bulletin andwants to connect with the class, especially his fellow industrial engineeringmajors. Jason and Linda, who live in Las Vegas, Nev., will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary inMay. Among their large family are three great-grandchildren. AfterLehigh, witha lawdegree fromColumbiaUniversity, Jason pursued amultifacetedcareer as lawyer, CPA, municipal court judge and author. He andLinda are alsoworldwide travelers. Jason offers a free download of his 2012 book, “Humans: An Endangered Species,” at jgbrent.com/order-the-book. html. Jason hopes to attend the reunion in June and looks forward to “meeting and greeting” all class members present. We hope to see as many of you as possible at the June reunion events. Watch your mail for details and reserve lodging early! Meanwhile, your news is always welcome. ’57 JamesWatson, 774Highview Drive, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. (201) 891-1246 (H); jwatson@execsearchinc.net Before you book all those summer trips, please block out June 9-12, 2022, for our 65th Reunion. We will be joining the classes of ’55 and ’56 for our Saturday evening dinner. Of course, there will be lots of opportunities to gather with all our 1957 classmates throughout the weekend. I was able to get to two home games this year. First, opening day in September, indeed a special day versus Villanova where you could bring your dog into the stadium, but there was no program for the game, had to print off cell phone. I did see Keith Rust there at his pavilion close to the parking lot. Sadly, his wife, Jill, had just passed away a fewweeks before the game. My second game in October versus Yale was for our annual Theta Delta Chi alumni weekend put together byWil Hawp ’62 andHaroldMilton ’63 for the classes of ’56 to ’63. About 20 of us gathered, followed by a great dinner at Harold’s house near Bethlehem. Looking forward to next year already. Had a great note from Paul Ringenbach. He and wife Sally are still in Schertz, Texas, and just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. They have four children and 15 grandchildren. Paul retired in San Antonio after 10 years with the USAA Insurance Co. Paul had sent me an obituary for his Sigma Nu fraternity brother, Joe Capuano, who recently passed away after a successful civil engineering career in the Carlisle, Pa., area. If I remember correctly, the Sigma Nu Class of ’57 pledged 10 football players and Paul, who at the time was themanager of the team. P.S. –We have an excellent 65th Reunion committee set up so far of about 40 grads led by Walter Mannherz (our man in Bethlehem), Robert Maida, Jacque Smith andmyself. I think we can break the record for a 65th Reunion and also have a chance tomeet up with some of our older alumni friends from the classes of ’55 and ’56. Stay healthy, I look forward to seeing you all in June. ’58Bill Helfrich, 80 Southwick Drive, Orchard Park, NY 14127. (716) 662-7927 (H); bh7831@aol.com Remember, we are 85 and alive! Lois Franco, wife of Bob Franco, reminded us all on Bob’s birthday to surprise himby sending a birthday email. Happy 85th birthday to you, Bob, and the whole Class of ’58. Lehigh football seasonwas not our usual tailgatewith Bob Christie serving and Larry Trerotola consuming because they left at halftime and even skipped some badweather games. But Bob andGina called fromthe Lafayette game as the onlyClass of ’58 attendingwith great weather and a great outcome. Harry Brooks ’59 invited Anne andme to join the Sigma Chis Pinky and EdHatfield ’55, Trish and Bill Burgin ’56, and BruceWaechter ’56 at the Holy Cross game, but weather kept us away. Dave Hecht ’60 and I managed to get theWesternNew York telecast group together at the Buffalo Sports Garden in Or-
