38 Distillation Guidebook Co-Lab • 9.18–9.19 2025 Doug Roysdon, Artistic Director of Mock Turtle Marionette Theatre, describes how his work grew from his little puppet theatre into a City venue, the Ice House, serving hundreds of community artists. are art creators who are trained, ready, and willing to think “out of the box”, and prepared to collaborate. And there are also many art creators that prefer more of a “leave me alone to do my thing” sensibility. The City must choose its partners carefully, and different kinds of artists are appropriate for different kinds of initiatives. I’m partial to ones who are willing to learn, in a reciprocal creative dialogue, along the way. There are going to be mistakes. Toes will be stepped on. There is a lot to learn, a lot of trust to build, on both sides of the City/Artist divide. Conversations can center around questions such as: • What steps can be taken towards strategies that advance organic creation to serve the whole? • How might we best work the local cultural soil or build an attitude of creative passion? • How can we turbo charge a mindset where structuring opportunities for young artists to fail is an essential part of healthy growth? • How can we utilize the arts more effectively in the schools to advance
