33 Small City Social & Cultural • Feature • William George perpetuating our compromised position as artists—our growth, our effectiveness in the community to do good, and the ability to do our most beautiful work. What is a beautiful city anyway? Does that mean it’s pretty? Or heterogeneous? Or that it has award winning hospitals, schools, clean water, a particular ratio of micro-breweries to population…? What are the defining metrics of a beautiful small city? I’d have to think Rumi’s Masnavi couldn’t hold all the stories and existential lessons that await any serious attempt to answer these questions. And how would one sensibly go about finding answers that effectively represent the whole of our unique and diverse communities? As we dusted ourselves off after the disaster of “The Geronimo Show” we couldn’t be fully aware of all the varied forces that were working at cross purposes in our effort, but we didn’t quit. We returned to the rehearsal hall and worked and worked as if our lives depended on it. And they did, in truth, in Bridget George talks about the birth of Touchstone Theatre
