9 Newcomers from each wave of immigration were not always immediately welcome. Social hierarchies emerged based on job status – ethnic groups were often assigned specific tasks in mills and factories – as well as how long different immigrant populations had been in town. But people of different ethnicities continued to come and were able to build their own homes for their families. These largely white ethnic groups often lived in close proximity and formed their own hyper-local neighborhoods within an urban and social landscape that was largely ordered by the city’s Steel Mills.
