54 St. Patrick's Church, located on Broad Street in Cumberland, RI, served the Catholic community of Valley Falls from 1861 until its closure in 2018 due to declining membership. The Diocese put the property on the market for sale. The Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission (RIHPHC), with concurrence from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), determined that the building was eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Town leaders, recognizing its iconic visual presence within the local landscape, were particularly interested in preserving and adaptively reusing the historic building.
