I have a vantage point as a commissioner on a Planning Commission that has been engaged in updating our Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) for the past two and a half years.** I also sit on the Ordinance Revisions Committee, which is the small subgroup of commissioners that works on drafting updates to the city’s zoning ordinances. And I’m also an architect, working not just in Ann Arbor, but in Detroit and other places. I think about the relationships between the text of the ordinance and the design outcomes – what’s determined materially, spatially, and urbanistically. As an educator, scholar, and researcher, I am also thinking about the role of research, speculative design, visualization, and imagination.
