4 Waterfront Themes Many small cities were established around rivers and bodies of water, and a majority of participants identified their waterfront as both a defining feature and one of their city’s greatest assets. At the same time, they are impacted by pollution, environmental damage, and uneven access. Access Issues and Mismatches Highways, industrial zones, or poorly planned development separate neighborhoods from waterfronts, creating a disconnect between residents and these valued spaces. Climate Change Threats Flooding, erosion, and rising water levels make investment and maintenance on the waterfront even more pressing.
