Natural Environments

52 Russell K. McIntire I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health at Lehigh University, where I teach and do research. I am a socio-behavioral researcher who studies how nature and green spaces improve human health. Some of my most satisfying research projects are collaborations with organizations who have missions to increase the amount of and access to quality green spaces among vulnerable populations. I help them quantify the health impacts of their programs, to generate evidence that they can use to support their work and build the case to funders for more funding. Despite what you may hear, evidence actually does impact the policies and the actions of those in power, especially at the local level. Generating and transmitting evidence of the influence of green spaces on health can impact policies and initiatives such as local zoning, open spaces preservation, educational campaigns, and advocating How can we restore and reimagine our relationships to our rivers and coasts? Distillation Guidebook Co-Lab • 9.18–9.19 2025 Professor of Public Health, Lehigh University, on the public health evidence linking rivers and blue spaces to human wellbeing.
