The results have been significant with $8.4 million raised for regional projects, 46 initiatives supported, and 32 EJ communities reached. The Sustainable Futures Initiative is proof that the rivers can still organize people, direct resources, and create significant economic and social benefits. It is impossible to restore rivers into the assets they once were without a shared vision to carry it forward, especially in a region where longstanding narratives of decline have narrowed what residents feel is possible. RiverWise started to ask what that collective vision could be. The rivers’ evolution mirrors Beaver County’s economic and social change; as communities disengaged physically and socially, the rivers became dividers. Despite this, the rivers continue to be seen as foundational elements of local community identity, and because of that, they represent the county’s ability to endure. Understanding this story of the waterways reframes the region’s identity away from loss to persistence. As their organizing principle, RiverWise is cultivating a collective imagination about what future change might look like and rebuilding the capacity to think beyond municipal boundaries.
