11 Small City Natural Environment • Scenarios Harrisburg offers an example of how waterfront redevelopment can simulateously improve public assess and climate resilience. The city’s longterm waterfront revitalization initiative was originally undertaken to address the public health hazards left by historic industrial activity along the river. Over time, this work has evolved beyond remediation to include the restoration and expansion of interconnected blue and green spaces, such as Wildwood Park, described as “a restored wetland area that cleans the air, provides opportunities for recreation and wildlife habitat.” Here, reclamation is multifunctional; it introduces greenspace and trails to enhance public access and ecological health, but also contributes to climate adaptation. The park and wetland area “helps mitigate flooding.” Responsible waterfront redevelopment can serve multiple purposes, ehancing public access and reducing flood risk. –Jennifer Gomez While we did decrease the intensity of some allowable uses within neighborhoods, we also created more consistency...
