Lehigh Fall Bulletin 2022

6 6 | L E H I G H B U L L E T I N N O T E S Greetings, Class of 2002 alumni. I hope you had a restful and relaxing summer and have been enjoying the arrival of fall, with changing leaves and cooler temperatures (depending on where you live!), pumpkin spice and football! Let’s jump right into our updates. Penny Soden lives with her husband and two sons (10 and 8) in Brooklyn, N.Y. She is a CPA, grants ofcer at a local college and a part-time Disney travel agent. Jason Allen has been married to his wife, Angie, for 14 years. They have two children, Emma (11) and Asher (8). Jason owns an insurance agency, and they live in Grapevine, Texas, just outside Dallas. Nicole (Mielke) Byram graduated fromLehighwith a B.S. in chemical engineering yet, for the past 20 years, has worked in biomedical engineering. Nicole beganworking in the Lerner Research Institute at the Cleveland Clinicmain campus in the artifcial heart and cardiac assist programs. Nicole is now part of the clinic’s Innovation Department, working with engineers, doctors and other caregivers to develop ideas into marketable inventions. She also is an experienced Zumba instructor. Nicolemarried the love of her life (AdamByram) at the Alta House back in 2014. They are Little Italy residents in Cleveland and also own and operate a few successful local Airbnbs. Amanda (Henry) Cadran ’02 ’03G is loving life in the Denver metro area after moving there in 2017 with her family. She is the program director for rapid cycle evaluation at B-Corp LearnPlatform and works with school districts and state boards of education across the country to help them gain practical and rigorous insights to the usage and efectiveness of their edtech programs. Amanda graduated fromNorth Carolina State University with her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, with a focus on instructional technology, back in 2016. On the side, Amanda is the volunteer host of the weekly show The Bar-Line Shift, on Homegrown Radio N.J., using all of the experiences she gained at both WLVR andWDIY during her Lehigh days. DJing local events around the Denver area is her release and a great way to keep connected to live music, which is still her passion after all the years booking shows for University Productions. Some things never change! Finally, some news on our home front! I successfully defended my dissertation, exploring the infuence of a school-based therapy dog reading program on reluctant readers’ motivation to read and reading fuency, and graduated with a Ph.D. in educational leadership in August. I also recently began a new position in my school district as the assistant superintendent of human resources. It certainly has been a whirlwind year! I would love for you to reach out and share what’s happening in your part of the world! Contact me at LCarino@att. netor on Facebook at Laura (Schwamb) Carino. Our classmates and I can’t wait to hear what you’re up to! Have a wonderful remainder of fall and holiday season. Stay tuned for more updates! ’03Safya (Jafari) Simmons, 5621 41454 Dauber Way, Leonardtown, MD 20650; safya_jafari@yahoo.com ’04Lloyd Henderson, lloydjr04@ gmail.com A shout-out to Scott Weston, who gave the following update: “This past March, Katie (Arscott) Sheil and Beau Sheil renewed their vows at the Martin Estate in Haleiwa, Hawaii. On hand to witness the ceremony were each of their parents, their six children (Kevin, Katarina, Kory, Kristine, and twins Karol and Korbin). Also attending were Lehigh alumni Lauren (Weinstein) Hourican, Jessica (Davidson) Weston ’06 ’08G, Scott Weston and Sean “Skarms” Kenny ’02. Everything was beautiful, and we wish themmany more years of happiness together!” Congrats again to the happy couple. If you have any updates, let me know at the above address. Till next time. ’05Jessi (Schimmel)McMullan, jessi.mcmullan@ alum.lehigh.edu Our 15th reunion has come and gone, we were small but mighty. My kids had a blast waving the class fag during the parade. Plan to come back for our 20th reunion in 2025, and let them make some next-generation Lehigh friends! We joined forces with the 20th reunion classes for dinner on Saturday andmade themost of our Mountaintop location by taking everyone up to the Tower. It was a perfect day, and you could see for miles in every direction through the LehighValley. There are two things I love about Reunion: 1) that youmight verywell meet a classmate you never crossed paths with as an undergrad and 2) getting to catch upwith alumni fromall years. I met George Hopkins for the frst time this year. George was in the business college and a Theta Xi brother. I was in Arts and Science and a Brown and White nerd. And yet, 17 years later, we had a great weekend representing 2005. George has worked in New York, New Orleans and Houston before fnding himself in Silicon Valley now. He got his MBA from Tulane and headed west to work for Stanford as a treasury projects manager. He has stayed very involved with Lehigh as an AVA volunteer doing prospective student interviews, professional development calls with current students during the pandemic, running with President Helble ’82 and with the Theta Xi Alumni Association. In fact, he planned a reunion event for Theta Xi this summer that gathered alumni from across many decades. In July, George and other Lehigh alumni and students got to ring the opening bell for the Nasdaq Stock Market in celebration of fve years of partnership with the Lehigh and Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center. The second thing I love about Reunion is the opportunity to interact with Lehigh alumni from all years. In my role with Alumni Relations at Lehigh, I get to interact with volunteers from as far back as the Class of 1951 to today’s frst-year students, the Class of 2026. Dick Allen ’51, the class correspondent, made a point of fnding me at Reunion, where he was the oldest celebrant! And at ReunionFest on Friday, I toasted with new and old friends from every decade. It’s fascinating to see campus through the eyes of someone who hasn’t been back in a while. I hope you’ll plan to come back in three years for our 20th! ’06Editor’s note: We’d like to thank Katie (Murray) Pennline for her decade of service to the university and her class. Whether across the pond or closer to home, Katie has kept her classmates feeling connected to one another and the university as she’s shared the major life milestones of this era of alumni. She has also been a representative on the Young Alumni Council. For her dedication, she was honored with the Alumni Award in 2021. Thank you for everything, Katie!
