Lehigh Fall Bulletin 2022

N O T E S refnery inMarcus Hook, Pa., until his retirement in 2020. Through the years, the refnery was owned by, among others, Standard Oil of Ohio, BP, Tosco, ConocoPhillips andMonroe Energy. Monroe is a subsidiary of Delta Airlines, and the refnery has produced Delta’s jet fuel since 2012. Don started work at the refnery as an engineer and eventually became the superintendent of operations. BP and Standard Oil of Ohio were involved in the construction of the Alaskan Pipeline. “In 2014, on a trip to Alaska, we were able to visit the pipeline, which was a highlight for Don. The refnery closed briefy in 1996, but Tosco reopened it a year later. During that time, Don was the plant manager at PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass) in nearby Folsom before returning to work at the Marcus Hook refnery. “Don and I spent many years attending our children’s events. In high school, our son played football and lacrosse. He continued his lacrosse career at the University of Delaware, where he was MVP and captain of the team. He works in analytics for a major fnancial institution. Our daughter has danced since age 3 and continued with the dance club in college, so we’ve also attended many recitals. She dabbled in some sports but eventually gave them up to devote time to tap, jazz, ballet, pointe and modern dance. She is now a second-grade teacher. “Don and I are the proud grandparents of one grandson and two granddaughters. All three of them are 5 and under. We are busy with grandchildren duty three days a week and love it! It’s a great way to spend retirement. We hope to resume traveling next year as we had several trips canceled over the past 19 months.” Modesty prevented Patty frommentioning Don’s legendary circus career, so I’ll respect her wishes by not describing it further. Our space restrictions once again will force me to hold back some great information from Gary Hauk, writing frst about our late classmate TimHaas and then about himself, so I’ll begin with that next time. One last note: I joined a group of former Lehigh lacrosse players, including several of my fraternity brothers, this spring at Bethlehem’s Apollo Grill. I was promised follow-up emails so I wouldn’t have to do interviews and take notes while we ate and drank, but so far, they haven’t come through. How about it? ’75ThomHirsch, 139McHenny Court, Chester,MD 21619, hirschlaw@verizon.net After two postponements because of the pandemic, our 45th reunion was fnally held June 9-12. Although attendance was below normal as expected with the reunion being out of the normal fveyear cycle, it was great to see so many classmates, especially after the two years of limited social interaction during the pandemic. Jef Sherman and Mardi Blacher-Reich (our class co-presidents), Sue (Adam) Richter (with Dan Richter ’73), Phil Kline, Curt Schmidt, Bill Maier, Tom Hoh, Bob Cardwell, Bill “BC” Cheswick, Joe Alleva, Nolan Rothkopf, Roxanne (Kapikian) Panosian and Doug Henning were in attendance. The conversation was, as always, very stimulating with our classmates, whose life journeys are so varied, interesting and impressive. There was also a lot of revisionist history about things that happened when we were undergraduates. Kidding aside, there were lots of discussions recalling what it was like for the women and men during the period when women frst attended Lehigh with so few women compared to the number of men and how the social dynamic changed from our freshman to senior year. The campus, of course, did not disappoint, looking so vibrant—especially the lower campus with the new Health, Science and Technology building near Maginnes Hall. There was lots of excitement and energy generated by the attendance of Lehigh’s new president, Joseph Helble ’82. His pride in returning to Lehigh where he received his bachelor’s degree and was a Gryphon is evident. Jef, Mardi and our class reunion committee are already starting to plan (dare I say it?) our 50th reunion in June 2025. Attendance at our 50th is expected to be quite large. Between now and then, keep an eye out for announcements of class get-togethers, like at football games in the fall. Let’s all work to have a terrifc 50th reunion to see old friends, renew old acquaintances and make new friendships. Don’t know about you, but the older I get, the more I enjoy meeting up with those who were a part of my life early on. News was received that John “Bucky” Kitto was presented an honorary membership and medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for lifetime achievement, including for work on groundbreaking waste-to-energy projects. Bucky led the development of the Palm Beach (Fla.) Renewable Energy Facility, the frst new waste-to-energy project in the U.S. in 20 years, and, in 2015, the cleanest and most effcient waste-to-energy project in the world. Bucky’s patent for Low NOx Cell Burner won the R&D 100 Award in 1994. I know I speak for our class when I say how impressed and proud we are of Bucky’s achievements! Please send information about what you have done since you graduated from Lehigh, including those of the class with whom you have stayed in touch. Your classmates want to hear from you. And don’t forget to “like” our class Facebook page, run by Jef Sherman. It can be found at facebook. com/lehighseventyfve? fref=ts. ’76MarkE.Goehring, 10 Princeton Drive, Shamong, NJ 08088. (609) 841-0389 (C); MarkGoehring LU76@gmail. com; Look for me on Facebook! To the Class of ’75 and the Class of ’77: “why can’t we be friends?” Good things (’76) come in small packages! From Thursday night’s Alumni Awards, where our own Bruce “YoGi” Perry received a long-overdue Class of ’76 award for his dedication to Lehigh all these years ... to our very last DJ dance song at our joint ’75, ’76 and a very large ’77 group dinner in the CUC building (yes, ’76 was last to leave, along with honorary mention to Curt Schmidt ’75). We paid the DJ to play a few more! Our parade theme, “Why can’t we be friends?,” and clever attire were fun, the hugs were big and the bribes to the judges were for naught! I thought we had Judge Nancy Liu ’83, as we ofered her a spare battery for her Tesla when it goes bad! Congrats to the Class of ’71 for your 50th and parade award, and a hearty thank you to Barry Glickman ’79 for his help and enthusiasm in our parade. Lehigh staf outdid themselves as all their venues were terrifc, including Friday’s blockbuster ReunionFest with Steve Bartosik ’77 and the Lehigh Alumni Band and two talented singers to the Saturday afternoon “happy hour” Block Party on the Hill 5 4 | L E H I G H B U L L E T I N
