Lehigh Fall Bulletin 2022

N O T E S the classes of 1965 and 1967 to enjoy numerous activities. Our marching prowess in the Parade of Classes was less than winning, but fun. Saturday was capped ofwith dinner in the Caruso Wrestling Complex. Wrestling coach Pat Santoro updated us and President JosephHelble ’82 stopped by. Frank Douglas was named the reunion class Alumni Award recipient. Lin Sheppard and Judy live in Furlong, Pa., and have been married for 56 years, since the weekend before graduation. They have two children and four grandsons. Largely quoting Len, “After anMBA fromWharton and one year in corporate America, we came back to Philadelphia where I spent 18-plus years in real estate investment and development, 14-plus years in healthcare and seven years in telecom, which bankrupted me. Starting over in 2009 at the age of 65, I had to fgure out what I wanted to do when I grew up. Now I am involved mostly with companies in the crypto and forex space, although I am involved with a couple of product-based businesses. “Spare time is taken principally by tennis and gardening. Over the past 30-plus years, Judy has exhibited at the Philadelphia Flower Show and has won numerous frst- and second-place ribbons, as well as several trophies (which proves I married a trophy wife). There is a lot that goes into exhibiting, and I’m her principal support. I used to be an avid skier. Over the years, we have been blessed with being able to do a lot of traveling—not as much recently, but more to come.” Ken Frohlich reported, “I retired when I was 62 and failed at retirement. I missed feeling productive, so at age 63, I went to Villanova Law School full time, graduated at 66, passed the bar and have been practicing law for the last 11 years, mostly representing individuals who have been cheated or mistreated by a company or organization. Last year, the Democratic Party persuaded me to run for treasurer of Radnor Township, a part-time position held by Republicans for the last 100 years. I won a four-year term, causing me to reduce my legal caseload. Before the pandemic, my wife and I traveled extensively. The pandemic started right after we returned from a three-week trip to Antarctica. We have visited all seven continents and over 100 countries. Hope to travel again starting next year.” JimHogrefe wrote, “My 30year career in corporate America was primarily in the airline and oil industries. I also enjoyed fve years running my own management consulting business. My frst marriage produced two great kids but sadly ended in divorce after 14 years. This happened one year after my decision to follow Jesus Christ, and it was Jesus who brought healing and growth. Volunteer ministry involvement from 1982 to 1996 eventually led me to attend seminary courses and a call to leave Texaco and begin a missionary career in Russia. “Since 1996 I have served with One Mission Society (OMS) in Russia, on staf in the U.S., as an itinerant missionary in India, and now developing church planting curricula for 600 training centers in Africa. OMS published my book, “The Far Side of the Sea,” chronicling my adventures—and that of earlier missionaries—in India. In 1999, I married Karen Chalfant. Karen has served with me on many trips to Asia, Europe and Latin America. We enjoy spending time with our kids and their families. Karen retired from OMS in 2017, and I expect to retire perhaps sometime in my 80s. Quieter pursuits include gardening, music, reading and games. Email me at jhogrefe@ onemissionsociety.org for information about my book.” ’67Eric Hamilton, journeyman618@ gmail.com Our 55th reunion was June 9-12. Twenty members of our class attended. Sorry if you missed it. It was a rousing success! Maybe not as well attended as in calmer days, but nonetheless, the well-planned reunion was not just for reunion years landing on 2s and 7s, but for all the 0s, 1s, 2s, 5s, 6s and 7s. That is a reunion for potentially three times the usual number. The greatest feature was seeing grads from two classes before ours. What a treat to see again people I knew from the classes of ’65 and ’66 who I have not seen in over 55 years. What fun! The Brown andWhite Awards dinner was Thursday evening in the Wood Dining Room of the Iacocca Conference Center. Most of the class awardees were present for a delightful sunset bufet dinner and awards presentation. The awards featured many class correspondents, including yours truly, for their volunteer work. The Friday Class of ’67 dinner was at the relaxed setting of the Saucon Valley Country Club. Unfortunately, the TAK and Theta Xi brothers were not at the dinner because they each had special celebrations at other venues. Sidebar: Tau Alpha Kappa brothers made up a third of all Class of 1967 reunion attendees this year! They included Jerry Silber, Roger Johnson, Mike Gofelf, Rich Janis and Bill Glascock. Saturday dinner at Caruso Wrestling Complex was relaxed and wonderfully catered. The center is in Grace Hall second foor, the former ROTC drill foor and classroom, also the site of freshman year Calculus 1 fnal exam, which featured heavy snow falling outside (10-13 inches). No fnal or class cancellations that year. The Class of ’62 sponsored the Saturday afternoon Kingston Trio concert in the Zoellner Arts Center. Sadly, none of the original group was present, but one of the current singers actually grew up in the home of one of the original group. He had some great stories, and all three of the present group were very entertaining and sang the songs perfectly, bringing back many old memories. Bill Schellhaas wrote, “Reunion weekend was indeed a great success! Tracy and I really enjoyed spending some quality time with you and Ellie. Kudos to Lehigh for making every event during the weekend great fun. Congrats to you for receiving the Alumni Award … well deserved! Let’s plan on getting together for dinner when you’re up this way.” D’Arcy Roper wrote to Fred Snyder about Fred appearing on the list of deceased classmates. “So sorry that Lehigh screwed up and recorded you as deceased. We will never know how it happened. Thank you for setting them straight and for your humor. I also appreciate your update. It has been a long time since Drinker Hall.” Fredcommentedon the matter, “I receiveda call from Carl Roth last evening.Hewas concernedabout thenews of mypassing ... as was I. I would like you to removemy name (at least temporarily) fromthe list of classmates who have recently died. I don’t knowwho reported the news, but asMarkTwainsaid, ‘The reports ofmydeathhave beengreatly exaggerated.’ After a scare fromkidney cancernearly fve years ago, I amprettyhealthy.” Fred went on to say, “Perhaps it is a good time for a brief update. About three years ago, my wife, Margaret, and I purchased a condo in a 55-andover community inWashington Crossing, Pa. We are both retired. We have a daughter 5 0 | L E H I G H B U L L E T I N
