FA L L 2 0 2 2 | 4 9 N O T E S 2023. As you can no doubt surmise, I enjoy Lehigh’s reunion celebrations and look forward to ours next June 8-11. Hope to see you there.” Fred Braun, himself, wrote, “Under the heading of what my father used to say ‘self-praise stinks.’ I was given a lifetime achievement award inMay by the New York State Economic Development Council for my 40-plus years (and counting) as a boardmember and chairman of the Town of Brookhaven’s Industrial Development Agency, where we have been successful in attracting commercial and industrial businesses to the town, along with several billion dollars of investment and the jobs that go along with those developments. The best part was the award was presented at an annual conference in Cooperstown ... it doesn’t get much better.” Dale Smith wrote about his Chi Phi ’63 brothers. “Sadly, fromour original class of 1963, Don Stanton, George Hagstoz, Carl Euker and George Johnson are nowdeceased. I still correspond sporadicallywith Ed Gott, George Converse and Tony Arcesi and believe them to be active, well and happily retired. Most recently, Betsy and I have had a great visit with Lew Parker and his wife, Sharon, who are both actively involved with current projects, including frequent travel fromtheir base in Leesburg, Va. Lew is still fully engagedwithWillowcroftWinery, his lifelong and successful hobby.” ’64David A. Riemondy, 774Malibu Lane, Indialantic, FL 32903. He and Harry were close friends for more than 60 years. Pete earned his B.S. in engineering physics from Lehigh in 1964 and then a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut. Pete worked at the U.S. Navy’s David Taylor Model Basin in Maryland as a scientist for more than 30 years. He spent most of his retirement years living in Southern California, but he lived in Vero Beach, Fla., during the last fve years. He was a Lehigh wrestling enthusiast and followed the team’s progress each year, watching as manymatches as possible online via FloWrestling and other networks. Harry says hemade an annual pilgrimage fromhis home in Pinellas Park to Vero Beach where “each year, we would watch the EIWAChampionships together wearing Lehigh T-shirts. Great memories. He was always a truly kind and loyal friend, and he will bemissed.” Harry Carothers continues to stay physically active. Despite having lumbar spinal fusion surgery in 2019 and not playing basketball for two years, followed by a total knee replacement in June 2021, Harry is back to playing basketball three times a week. He says he is a “happy camper again. May 2022 put the icing on the cake.” His senior basketball team, the Clearwater Aces, won two national-level championships. One (the National Masters Basketball Championships) is the largest full-court tournament for seniors in the U.S., and the other (the National Senior Games Basketball Championships) is the largest half-court tournament for seniors in the U.S. Harry doesn’t know how much longer he can continue to do this, but he says they are “presently having a lot of fun” and “fortunately, I don’t have to run very fast to keep up with my competition.” Harry and the majority of his teammates plan to compete at the age 80+ level in 2023. I wish I had Harry’s stamina. Mickey and I took a three-week trip to Israel, Egypt and Jordan in April and are still recovering from the heat and exercise. We never see hills here in Florida. On our second day in Jerusalem, we recorded 18,000 steps—all up hills. Egypt was unusually hot for April (106-109 degrees), and the sites are all up hills or down stairs to the tombs. The ancient Egyptians sure liked to build big things that last. The highlights for us were the Temples in Luxor and Nefertari’s tomb in the Valley of the Queens. Unmolested by tomb raiders, it is amazing. We took a dip in the Dead Sea from the Jordan side. It’s impossible to stand up in as little as a foot of water because you are so buoyant. Petra is very interesting, but take the golf cart or ride a camel. It’s a long walk down and back up. It was a great trip, but I wish we had made it when we were younger. I’ve made a video if you want an armchair tour. I got a note from Everett (Rhett) Stellan Smith’s son. Littleson says his dad was so embarrassed by his dismal performance in the Over the Top race, he has sold most of his snowmobiles and purchased a 1970 vintage Helio Courier. He is restoring the aircraft and plans to use it to explore remote regions of the Arctic next spring. I had a nice chat with Jay Lacke. He and June were in Cape Cod for their annual summer holiday. Jay will give us an update on his Delta Chi classmates in the fall column. ’65Ronald L. Workman, 1981 Berrel Court, Yardley, PA 19067-7225. (215) 808-0809 (H); ron_workman@ prodigy.net Despite some ominous weather predictions, our 55th reunion was celebrated in style in June. We were delighted to have the following classmates and spouses in attendance for one or more events: Joe Alber, JimBirdsall, John Campbell, Joe Colla, Barbara Doxey, Paul Doxey, WilliamDraper, John Guinan, Mary Beth Karr, Janet Klayton, Ron Klayton, Rich Lynch, ReinMannik, Dr. Maryanne McGuckin-Guinan, JimMiller, John Organek, Rick Penske, Gail Varady, John Varady, Joe Walton, KenWoodcock and RonWorkman. The weekend celebration began with an all-classes dinner on Thursday night, where Rein Mannik received the well-deserved Alumni Award for the Class of 1965. We gathered on Saturday morning for the Parade of Classes and proudly marched behind our class fag, which we discovered is sadly in need of renovation. Time and the moths have not been kind to it. Lunch followed on the lawn outside Packard Lab, and we ended our weekend on Saturday evening with cocktails and dinner at the Caruso Wrestling Complex on the top foor of Grace Hall, along with the classes of 1966 and 1967. We were excited to hear remarks from Lehigh President Joseph Helble ’82, All American and triple EIWA championMike Caruso ’67 and wrestling coach Pat Santoro. Coach Santoro, by the way, is extremely optimistic about our prospects for this season based on the number of returning seniors and the number of highly talented new recruits, both frst-years and transfers. We will look forward to our 60th reunion in three years. If anyone would like a picture of our Saturday night group, email me and I will forward it to you. ’66James A.
