PAGE 20 LIBRARY AND TECHNOLOGY SERVICES - - 5 Events & Exhibitions BANDALOOP The Zoellner Arts Center and Library and Technology Services sponsored a series of arts programs featuring the international aerial dance company BANDALOOP, performing LOOM: Field. Bringing together a collective of performing artists, climate scientists, regenerative textile artists, a visual tech nologist, and creative riggers, the piece turned the exterior of Fairchild-Martindale Library into a giant loom where stories and dances interlace. In between performances, over 300 local school-age children took part in workshops inside the library, facilitated by Lehigh Libraries staff, Zoellner Arts Center, and the National Museum of Industrial History (NMIH). Over three stations, students learned about regional silk production, wove their own textiles with a giant loom, and deconstructed fashion from across time periods and nations. Special Collections staff presented the history of silk production in the Lehigh Valley. Students learned about the historical origin of silk, silkworms, and our region’s rich textile industry history. LTS staff used photographs of costumes and every day wear from movie and TV characters, athletes, performers, and cultural figures to engage students around questions of fashion and its relationship to creative expression, identity, history, geography, and functionality. NMIH staff demonstrated use of a loom, inviting students to contribute the woven cloth as a piece of community storytelling. The Photography of BANDALOOP, an exhibition of over 25 photos from around the world showcasing BANDALOOP’s complex choreography and daring use of public spaces, was on display in the FairchildMartindale Library Study Gallery throughout the spring semester.
