68 | LEHIGH ALUMNI BULLETIN | CLASS NOTES she attended her father’s 20th Lehigh reunion. Kerry is the director of advancement at a Catholic elementary school after 14 years in the marketing department at The Children’s Place. Together, our families toured the new Business Innovation Building, which was incredibly impressive. In the afternoon, Margie (LaNeve) Hammell arrived on campus with husband Mike in time for her to carry our class flag in the reunion parade. They live in New Jersey with their cat and dog, and since graduation, Margie has worked in different facets of the civil engineering industry. She currently works for Langan and has her own side engineering consulting business. The three of us get together at least once a year for a Lehigh football game (and a restocking of Lehigh apparel). While Kerry and Margie remain very close and see each other frequently, Rachel Benney and I have remained close friends over the years as well—even vacationing together. Rachel drove to our reunion from outside Baltimore, where she works as a controller for a software company. After graduation, she first worked as an external auditor for PWC in New York City. Then, in Chicago, she was an assistant controller for a segment of Dover Corp. and head of the SEC reporting group when the segment was spun off into a new public company. After a stint outside Seattle, Rachel now lives close enough to me where we get to visit each other a few times a year—which our boys, who are just one year apart, really enjoy. During our class dinner the Saturday night of the reunion, our group took time to remember some of the classmates we knew who have passed: specifically, Joe Sipley. Although Joe was a ChemE major at Lehigh, he had enjoyed the investment banking world and became an analyst for Scion Capital after graduation. He was at the start of Scion’s shorting of the subprime mortgage market in 2005, the subject of the book-turned-movie “The Big Short,” where Christian Bale portrayed hedge-fund manager Michael Burry. Joe had two sons with his wife, Tina, and completed law school at the top of his class at Rutgers, despite his cancer treatments that included regular stints in California. He resumed work at Scion as a director but left this world in 2019 after an extraordinary fight. In a 2021 tweet, Scion founder Michael Burry shared a screenshot of his email to Joe that began their betting against the housing bubble and said of him, “A more brilliant one, I never met.” Feel free to reach out with your story and/or news about other classmates who have passed—it’s a great way to keep their memory alive. I also encourage you to mark the dates now for the reunion each year, or at least for our 25th reunion in 2028. It’s great fun! ’04 Lloyd Henderson, lloydjr04@gmail.com ’05 Jessi (Schimmel) McMullan, jessi.mcmullan@alum.lehigh.edu In the middle of her busy recruiting season, Khayla (Lowe) Atte took a few minutes to share what she’s been up to since graduation. An artist at the core, she worked for many years postgrad for the nonprofit Mural Arts Philadelphia working with at-risk youth to create community murals. Her competitive drive brought her back to coaching 10 years ago. A decorated heptathlete in her undergrad days, Khayla has been coaching the track and field team at Lehigh for the last five years and, this spring, added head coach of the men’s team to her current role of head coach of the women’s team. A self-described “adrenaline junkie,” she says she loves track and field because there are so many types of athletes and “it’s eclectic and holds your attention.” Khayla lives in University City, Philadelphia, with her husband of 14 years and two kiddos, 11 and 6. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports management at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her dream is that someday the Rauch Business School will capitalize on the enormity of the sports industry and offer a sports management track to business students here. Meanwhile, she is “excited to see the direction the athletic department is going” as collegiate sports continue to evolve through the amateur-professional divide. “Keeping Lehigh competitive is interesting and exciting,” she said. Lavar Pope is a clinical associate professor of political science in Arrupe College at Loyola University Chicago. He was featured in ABC 7’s “Our Chicago: Freedom Music,” “a dynamic celebration of freedom expressed through the music of Chicago’s Black community” as part of a Juneteenth celebration. The feature can be seen at abc7chicago.com/ juneteenth-2023-chicagoblack-music-house/13392258/. The ’05 Alpha Gamma Delta sisters sent me a lovely memorial of their sister: “Lauren Iamascia Haynes passed away on June 7 at home surrounded by family and friends. Lauren majored in supply chain management, was a member of the crew team and Alpha Gamma Delta. She’s best known for her quick wit, easygoing personality, love of music, amazing laugh and fun sense of style. Lauren was a passionate educator and in her free time enjoyed traveling and relaxing at the beach. She celebrated her 40th birthday in May with a spectacular party reminiscent of carefree Lehigh days. Lauren is missed beyond measure by her husband Matt, mother Ellen, brother John, beloved puppy Romeo, Alpha Gam Sister Squirrels and countless others. Donations in her memory can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.” ’06 Kevin Frost, Kevin.Frost@alum. lehigh.edu Hello, Class of 2006! I am happy to take over as class correspondent. Many thanks to Katie (Murray) Pennline, Sumona (Basu) De Graaf, Mike Psathas and everyone else who has helped in the past. It has already been a lot of fun reconnecting with many of you since I started. Please keep those updates coming! The two quick updates on my end are that I joined the faculty of the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law in July 2022 and that we welcomed our first child, Emmett David William Frost, in September 2021. Life on the Seacoast in New Hampshire is very pleasant, even with the shorter golf season. Mike Dobkin and Meghan Berkenstock welcomed their fourth child, Martin Noah Dobkin, on May 8, 2023. Mike is an associate architect at BCT Architects in Baltimore and Meghan is an associate professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, specializing in uveitis and cataract surgery. Gabriela (Keely) Coleman provided this update: “In 2021, I realized my ‘side hustle’ (European Wax Center Franchisee) was becoming a bigger deal than I had anticipated. So, in a leap of faith, I quit the partner track of my firm and went full-on in expanding my footprint in Michigan. As of January 2023, I am the largest operator of EWCs in the state of Michigan, with the No. 1 location in my hometown of Ann Arbor.” Way to go! Jenny Franco checked
