56 | LEHIGH ALUMNI BULLETIN | CLASS NOTES granddaughter—that makes six in all. Kathy retired four years ago, and I retired one year ago and am loving every minute. We are keeping in touch with all of our Kappa Sigma brothers, who are doing great things. Bob Miller continues to wow the business world, and John Sanlorenzo and lovely wife Debbie are enjoying all of the fun activities of Park City, Utah, and beyond (he loves the lifestyle offered in Park City and contends the summer offers more than the winter!). Delta lost a really good man when he retired, but good for John! Lou Perrelli is skiing up a storm in California, and all is good. Dr. Robert Hedderman is looking to retire, but he has set up a foundation on his own, for what I do not know, but it is definitely to help those in need. Bob is and always has been a man to help others. We still keep close to Libby Mountsier (John Mountsier’s widow) and the kids.” Thanks to Kevin Kennedy, who took the time to write. He spent 17 years in CEO roles and then transitioned to less intense positions, now serving as chief of staff to a small EV startup, while at the same time serving on the board of two public and two private companies. After 28 years in Silicon Valley, he and his wife, Barbara, moved to Paradise Valley, Ariz., where they hosted a small student send-off for new Lehigh students this summer. At a mini ATO gathering, Nicholas Hantzes, Mark Arendas, Jeff Armstrong and their wives had a fun week at Hilton Head Palmetto Dunes, enjoying golf, tennis, hanging out at the ocean and “reminding ourselves of the good old days at Lehigh, when we were 45 years younger.” Nick, now the three of you need to get back for our 50th reunion! I had a nice conversation with Pete Gushue this summer. Retired from a medical waste company, Pete had just moved from Williamsburg, where he had lived for 25 years, to Richmond, Va. He received his doctorate from University of Alabama and taught history, with a specialty in Latin American history. Jay Pennick writes, “When I left South Mountain in 1977 with my journalism degree in hand (thanks to Professors McFadden, Sullivan and Friedman), I pursued a reporter’s life at a daily newspaper in northeast Massachusetts until I became a hostage of an improv comedy troupe in Boston’s burgeoning comedy scene in the ’80s, then following a fellow journalist’s directive: Go west, young man. I did. To Hollywood. Married (37 years and going strong), two kids, one grandkid, living the life in the Golden State. “Yet, I never lost my Lehigh roots. I’ve returned to Lehigh a few times to lace up the skates and play in the Lehigh alumni hockey games, alongside our co-captains Bobby Oliwa and Mike Dale ’79, joined by Ed O’Mara ’78, Whit Cummings, Jim ‘Cookie’ Cookingham ’79, Pete Bechtel ’76, Bill Maloney ’80, Murray Wilmerding ’81 and Doug Hansen ’75. Great time had by all as we alum cheered on the present-day Lehigh skaters from the comfort of the welcoming bar at the Steel Ice Center. Thanks to Barb Turanchik (’75) for doing yeoman’s work organizing the alumni games and wrangling a wide variety of former LU players ranging from classes in the 1960s-2010s in the wild, wonderful and entertaining weekends. Nothing says party like South Bethlehem in mid-January. “Taylor Hall, the gray concrete fortress perched at the portal to the Hill, was my home sweet, beer-soaked home for my four years at Lehigh, and we parolees from Taylor have stayed connected. Eric ‘Big E’ Hanssen ’76 holds semi-regular Zoom meetings with such Taylor luminaries as Maury ‘O’Toad’ Deutsch ’75, George ‘Hopper’ Shoffner ’75, Paul ‘Opie’ Zimmermann ’75, Bobby ‘O’ Oliwa, ‘Pre-Med’ Ned Bogart ’76, Pete ‘Luds’ Ludlum, Burt Hoffman ’75, Scott Sanders , Bob ‘Spags’ Spagnola ’78, Tim Loose, as well as other characters and miscreants who pop in from time to time.” It is with a heavy heart that I report that Howard Foltz lost his valiant battle with cancer, one week before he was scheduled to emcee as the Class of ’77 adopted the incoming Class of ’27. He proudly carried his father’s 1946 class flag at the Rally for over 20 years! Howard probably never missed a reunion and was there at our 45th reunion last year. Howard was a passionate skier and instructor at Blue Mountain Resort, an avid golfer and Lehigh football fan and a devoted husband, father and grandfather and could certainly be considered as “Mr. Lehigh” with his unwavering support of the university and his fraternity, Kappa Sig. His celebration of life was held on the day of the Rally with most of his Kappa Sigma classmates there, including Ted Smith, Bob Miller, Lou Perrelli, Bill Murphy, Bob Hedderman, Roy Uptegraff, John Bishop, Rick Bloom and John Sanlorenzo. ’78 GUEST CORRESPONDENT: Greg Scott, 400 Eagle Nest Drive, Camden, DE 19934; grscott1956@gmail.com I was honored to be asked to be a guest contributor for our class article. Over the weekend of June 8-11, we celebrated our 45th reunion at Lehigh. Twenty-three of our class attended. It was a rousing success! Perhaps not as well attended as previous ones, but one of the best reunions I have attended. The most frequent question was, “Have you seen …?” Our committee actually started planning for the reunion in January. Our committee was comprised of myself, Rich Coleman, Karen (Talhelm) Knauer, Marsha (Marson) Moller, Daniel Solis-Cohen and Marci Pevner-Spanitz. We put out a short questionnaire at the reunion dinner on Saturday night, and the most common response we got regarding what people would like to see different for our next reunion was “more attendance” and “a better showing at the parade of classes, with more choreography.” It seems that around 70 percent of our classmates have already retired. I’m sure that those who haven’t are just around the corner. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were just youngsters graduating from Lehigh, starting our careers and raising families, and now we’re at the other end of our careers. Many of our classmates have been doing a lot of traveling. Some have been volunteering. Gloria Holt is one of just a few of our classmates who has attended all of our reunions. She has taken up playing the cello and loves it. Karen (Talhem) Knauer sings with a volunteer group of retirees that performs in assisted living facilities. Marsha (Marson) Moller decided to take up golf, and while she admits she isn’t really good at it, she loves playing. John Papazian retired from Colgate Palmolive after 27 years and spent many years serving on his local school board. John was one of several Phi Delta Theta alums, including myself, who helped to get our fraternity reinstated back on the Lehigh campus in 2014. He continues to serve on the advisory board and as province president. I myself have found extreme pleasure in putting my engineering skills to use by traveling around the world helping to build churches for missionaries trying to establish churches in remote locations. Marci Pevner-Spanitz spends a lot of her time volunteering for Lehigh and entering sweepstakes. She is really good at it and has won some spectacular prizes. During the reunion, the Brown and White Awards din-
