8 Humanities I N S I D E T H E The humanities promote vigorous academic inquiry and research on critical philosophical issues and the world’s cultures, languages, and literatures. The humanities examine how people throughout time have understood themselves and their environments. By working with our faculty, many of whom are leading scholars in their respective fields, you are exposed to experiential opportunities and historical contexts that develop a sense of intellectual curiosity and the judgment necessary to function effectively in our increasingly global societies. Humanistic studies emphasize effective and determined communication through writing and speech, reasoning and debate, critical thinking, interpretation, and appreciation for differing perspectives. Studies in the humanities help students develop a keen ability to participate in social and political life. They foster sensitivity to moral issues, flexibility, and the ability to rationally consider the merits of conflicting views. The humanities provide you with the foundation needed to solve social problems and dilemmas. Our faculty will help you extend knowledge gained in class to the larger community, and national and international issues as a result of outreach and engagement opportunities. They will empower you to become a life-long learner who can meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. C O L L E G E O F A R T S & S C I E N C E S / H U M A N I T I E S
