Departments in the arts create an academic environment in which the arts may be considered as individual disciplines as well as interdisciplinary forms that strengthen each another. In addition to providing strong programs for arts majors, the College of Arts and Sciences ensures that Lehigh’s entire student population has the opportunity to experience and study the arts as a key component of a well-rounded liberal arts education. Outside the formal production and performance areas lies Lehigh’s Guest Artist Series, where performances in Zoellner Arts Center link the arts, learning, and life by providing valuable information to those who are passionate about the arts, and those who may be exploring them for the first time. Students can also experience more than 17,000 works of art from diverse time periods and cultures, seven galleries, two art study centers, and an outdoor sculpture collection of more than 50 works through Lehigh University Art Galleries. A Lehigh education establishes the foundation to pursue graduate study in the very best graduate programs, and our faculty are working artists, helping students establish contacts if they wish to move immediately into a career. Many of our alumni own architectural design firms or work with performing arts organizations. Other careers include graphic design, product design, fashion, film, or television.

8 Humanities I N S I D E T H E The humanities promote vigorous academic inquiry and research on critical philosophical issues and the world’s cultures, languages, and literatures. The humanities examine how people throughout time have understood themselves and their environments. By working with our faculty, many of whom are leading scholars in their respective fields, you are exposed to experiential opportunities and historical contexts that develop a sense of intellectual curiosity and the judgment necessary to function effectively in our increasingly global societies. Humanistic studies emphasize effective and determined communication through writing and speech, reasoning and debate, critical thinking, interpretation, and appreciation for differing perspectives. Studies in the humanities help students develop a keen ability to participate in social and political life. They foster sensitivity to moral issues, flexibility, and the ability to rationally consider the merits of conflicting views. The humanities provide you with the foundation needed to solve social problems and dilemmas. Our faculty will help you extend knowledge gained in class to the larger community, and national and international issues as a result of outreach and engagement opportunities. 13 LIFE AFTER LEHIGH The career opportunities for graduates within the natural sciences are very wide. You may wish to undertake additional study or research. You may wish to move into a career, and there are many employment opportunities for our graduates. Many graduates in the natural sciences go on to pursue professional programs in biology, medicine, engineering, education, dentistry, optometry, and pharmacy. They may also prepare for science and mathematics related employment in areas such as biotechnology, natural resources and environmental management, education, and journalism.

The education you receive establishes the foundation to pursue graduate education in the very best graduate programs. You may wish to move immediately into a career. Our alumni go on to enjoy such careers as museum and archive curators, science and environmental writers, analysts and advisers in government agencies, financial services, banking, and health care. The possibilities are endless. Degrees in the social sciences can open up employment opportunities in a wide range of occupations in business, banking, insurance, education, health professions, administration, law, social services, voluntary and campaigning organizations, the media, public relations, public service organizations and government (national and local), and social welfare organizations.

17 In the social sciences, you’ll learn about people— how they act both individually and collectively. You’ll study all aspects of society—from past events and achievements to human behavior and relationships among groups. You’ll seek to understand the different ways individuals and groups make decisions, exercise power, and respond to change. Then you’ll apply your studies and analyses toward finding solutions to social, business, personal, governmental, and environmental problems. Research is a major activity of many Lehigh social scientists, and the interests of our faculty and students encompass an enormous range of subjects, whether it’s investigating the roots of stereotyping, exploring international trade and globalization, analyzing mass media coverage of scientific or political issues, or studying governmental policies that affect our lives. Many students actively participate in research activities. By working with Lehigh faculty, many of whom are leading scholars in their respective fields, you are exposed to experiential opportunities that develop a sense of intellectual curiosity and the judgment necessary to function effectively in our increasingly complex world. Students also can take advantage of our strong connections with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies, and private foundations. These relationships provide you with unique opportunities for learning experiences outside of the classroom and give you an edge in finding the right job after you graduate.
