GRADUATE PROGRAMS As a student, you will: • Gain a broad knowledge of British and American literature in its historical context, including recent expansions of the canon; • Advance your understanding of one or more recent theoretical approaches and the ability to use those methodologies to investigate literary, cultural, or pedagogical issues; • Choose a concentration of work in a major field, which is also the principal area of research; • Design and teach composition and literature to undergraduates each semester; • Develop sufficient background in composition and rhetoric to have a theoretical basis for teaching courses in writing. M.A. candidates typically complete the program in 2 years with 33 credit hours of coursework and an optional thesis. Ph.D. candidates typically complete the program in 7–10 years with additional credit hours (depending on entry level) as well as a dissertation.
