Bulletin-Spring23

CLASS NOTES | SPRING 2023 | 63 tailgate as well! Also in the fall, on Sept. 17, 2022, Cheryl (Miller) Flamini’s sister, Missy Miller ’85, ran a charity event for Grin & Win, the charity started by Missy with Cheryl’s husband and kids. As many of you may remember, Cheryl was a member of our class whom we lost to cancer, and her sister and family started a scholarship at Lehigh in her name. Cheryl was a varsity athlete and a member of Gamma Phi Beta. This is one of the only scholarships that supports a Lehigh student on behalf of a Lehigh Class of 1987 member. Lehigh 1987 class members came out to the event, which was a tailgate at a Lehigh lacrosse game and the same day as the Lehigh-Richmond football game. In attendance from our class were Jeff Neu, CJ (Jaccodine) Hovey and Carol (Zeller) Volk. Donations can still be made at the website grinandwin. squarespace.com/about. There are some great photos on our Facebook page from the event. We have been crazy in my house getting out college applications for my daughter, who is a senior. Can’t wait to see where everyone ends up. Please write with any news or updates that you learned at Reunion. Hope everyone is happy and healthy. Miss you all. ’88 Dave Best, dave@ bestcollegeconsulting.com One of the most talented athletes in Lehigh history is our classmate Daren Queenan. He injected excitement into the Lehigh men’s basketball program and created many fond memories for our Class of 1988 during his four years on South Mountain. I remember fondly joking with Daren that he should be an honorary member of the “stats club” (I was team statistician), and he casually explained he couldn’t because he “made the stats.” His number 12 was retired and hangs from the rafters in Stabler Arena. ‘Q’ was elected to the Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 for setting LU men’s basketball records for points (2,703) and rebounds (1,013). At the time, he was one of only six players in NCAA Division 1 history to achieve over 2,700 points and 1,000 rebounds. He led Lehigh to its first-ever NCAA Basketball Tournament appearances in 1985 (Georgetown) and 1988 (Temple). He went on to play professionally in the CBA (winning the Slam Dunk Contest in 1989) and a lengthy career in the Belgian Professional Basketball League. Daren is a client relationship manager at Morgan Stanley after a 15-year run at TIAA. A proud dad, his daughter Maya is director of creative content for the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball program after earning degrees from University of South Carolina and her master’s from Temple University. ’89 Jocelyn (Gitlin) Deutsch, 9 Vincent Lane, Armonl, NY 10504; jocelyndeutsch@hotmail.com Chris Seymour’s son Gavin is a sophomore studying chemical engineering and IBE. One hundred percent of their kids are/were at Lehigh, as Samantha graduated in 2021 with a chemical engineering B.S. Scott Nestler changed roles again. He is now principal data scientist and optimization lead for SumerSports, a sports analytics startup that works with NFL teams to optimize their rosters. Neil Canell and Jay Canell are managing directors and wealth managers with JP Morgan, Wealth Partners. Somehow, they continue to amaze me with their endless energy and ability to always make time to help others in need. In late March 2023, both are being honored by SCOPE with the Ben Applebaum Advocates for Youth Award. Summer camp is an essential component of the year-round educational continuum and plays a critical role in helping children from underserved communities to thrive. SCOPE bridges the opportunity gap by making summer camp accessible to children from financially disadvantaged families. Glenn Oratz and his wife, Gabrielle, have twin boys, Dylan and Justin, who are sophomores at Syracuse University and University of Miami, respectively. He is managing director at UBS in the Private Wealth Management Group. A couple of years after graduating from Lehigh, Glenn moved to Los Angeles for graduate school and received his MBA at UCLA. They have lived in California since then but, after becoming empty nesters, decided to purchase a home in Florida to spend more time on the East Coast, splitting time between Delray Beach, Fla., and San Diego, Calif. In November, while watching the Lehigh-Lafayette game, he ran into Marshall Davis, who lives in South Florida as well. Also in attendance was my dad, Buddy Gitlin ’62, and they shared a cocktail or two and reminisced about me. Oh, my! I am devastated to share that in April, our classmate, and also my “boss,” John Carl died of a heart attack. Many of his Delta Upsilon fraternity brothers (too many to mention by name) came to pay their respects at John’s funeral, and it was wonderful to catch up with them. John was the president and founder of The Retirement Learning Center, an ERISA and retirement services consulting firm. I have been working in sales and marketing at John’s firm for six years and miss him dearly. John’s wife, Viveka, started a foundation at the College of Business at Lehigh in John’s honor. If you would like to contribute, there are plans in place to continue John’s work with the Wall Street Council and supporting business students at Lehigh. On a happier note, my daughter Marlee graduated from Lehigh in 2021 and is living in NYC working as a recruiter in the Quants space for Selby Jennings. Both my son Matthew (senior) and daughter Talia (freshman) are at Tulane University. Mike and I are enjoying being empty nesters and just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. ’90 Michael Lewis, mpl1968@yahoo. com and Dave Tratner, dctsports@gmail.com Hello, Class of 1990! In a bit of a time capsule, we are submitting our spring 2023 update on almost exactly the 35th anniversary of the final Lehigh football game at the legendary Taylor Stadium. You may recall, it was “kind of a chilly day”: 20 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff with wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph throughout the game. And yes, for those who attended, we all saw bare-handed students fighting to claim pieces of the wooden goal post following the final gun. In our outreaches for this issue, we heard from Maribel (Cabrera) Ibrahim. She’s celebrating her ninth year as the facilities director for the Anne Arundel County Public Library system, the seventh largest of the 24-county library systems in Maryland. On the personal front, she’s the proud mom of three teenagers, including a high school graduate who just began enrollment at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Maribel graduated from Lehigh with a B.S. in industrial engineering. We also heard from David Bader, who not only remains involved with Lehigh as a member of the advisory board of Lehigh’s Electrical and Computing Engineering Department, but also serves as the inaugural director of New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Institute for Data Science. This past year, he received
