Bulletin-Spring23

CLASS NOTES | SPRING 2023 | 61 enthused about his elevation to ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. I hopped on the telephone with Tom to chew the fat as both of us are political junkies. Craig Newick continues to win major awards for his architecture company in New Haven, Conn., and suggests anybody with exciting new projects to contact him at cnewick@newickarchitects.com and newickarchitects.com. Joan and I vacationed in Scottsdale, Ariz., in September and caught up for dinner and a nice night out with Lee Martucci and his lovely wife, Trina. Until next time, be well. ’83 Nancy Liu Freedman, nancyliulehigh83@gmail.com Happy spring, Class of ’83! I hope you are all safe and getting out more. Everyday life seems to be getting back to normal. Thanks, Bob Funnell, for sending me some news. Bob attended a few Lehigh events in California. In 2021, he attended the Lehigh-Lafayette telecast game in Sacramento. This past July, he went to the NASDAQ Center in San Francisco, where Ann Lewnes was going to ring the opening bell, but she was sick that day. The event commemorated the fifth anniversary of the collaboration in entrepreneurial education through Lehigh@ NasdaqCenter. Bob hopes he can make it out for the reunion next June 2023. Bob, I saw you in the back row in the group picture of the NASDAQ event. I hope to see you at the reunion in June. Classmate sightings Founders Day Weekend Congratulations to the 2022 Public Service Award honoree Karen Shihadeh Schaufeld ’15P, ’17P. Karen is CEO of SWaN Hill Top House Hotel LLC and Altor Locks. She is also the founder and president of 100WomenStrong, a granting organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of residents of Loudoun County, Va.; the co-founder of All Ages Read Together, a school readiness program for low-income preschoolers; the founder of Powered by Facts to spread awareness about the Virginia energy policy; and the founder/investor of WE Capital, a consortium that supports female-led startups. Her husband, Fred ’81, and son, Max ’17, were there to see Karen accept the award. It’s amazing how much Karen has accomplished. She has devoted her life to philanthropic causes, and this is a well-deserved honor for Karen. Eric Walsky attended the Leadership Recognition Dinner to support his parents, Priscilla and Lawrence Walsky ’58. The Walskys are new 1865 Society inductees, a recognition to those who make extraordinary contributions to Lehigh. Their names have been added to the Leadership Plaza. I bumped into Paul Camuti at the new Health Science Technology (HST) Building open house. He lives in North Carolina and is executive vice president and chief technology and strategy officer of Trane Technologies. Soaring Together—Dinner for 12 Philadelphia I reconnected with Mary (Mihalsky) Scheuermann at the dinner at Tequilas in Philly. Mary lives in Philly and is currently vice president, aviation services, east regional manager at Atkins Global. Dinners for 12 bring together alumni, with shared locations or interests, who usually don’t know each other. The events are a chance to discuss intriguing topics facing the country and the world. I encourage you to try to attend these Dinners for 12 in your area to meet with other alumni. Football Games A bunch of classmates wandered by our tailgate this season. Lambda Chi brother Clem Palevich and his real brother Ed ’88 stopped by our tailgate. His son, Clem Jr., is Class of 2025 at Lehigh. Clem lives in the Baltimore area and is an adviser in the energy and sustainability space. Others who stopped by were Pete Marri and fellow Sig Ep brothers Steve Fleischer ’84 and Paul Rinaldi ’82, as well as Brad Parkes and Brian McGuinness ’84. Enjoy your spring and summer, and please send me any news or photos. Reminder: Our 40th reunion is June 8-11, 2023. Please mark your calendar, and I hope to see you there! Please let me know if you want to help in planning our reunion. ’84 Thomas Keating, 250 Carillon Parkway #421, St. Petersburg, FL 33716; thomaskeating@ yahoo.com Another edition of the Rivalry is in the books! I visited the Goodman and Asa Packer campuses on Lehigh-Lafayette game day. The Delta Chi and Psi Upsilon tailgaters were in full force and monitoring the game from the Stabler parking lot. I saw Jim Hart and Robin (Cohen) Hart, the perennial hosts of the Delta Chi tailgate, as well as my Pinellas County neighbor Danny Isla, who left his coat in sunny Florida. Robin has kept me informed on her busy life and meeting with our fellow classmates in her August update: “Our summer has primarily been a whirlwind of kids moving. First, our son, Connor, graduated from the University of South Carolina and moved to NYC for the summer for a post-grad internship, during which we had the thrill of seeing his byline in The Wall Street Journal! He has enjoyed it immensely and has accepted a job beginning in September as a reporter at the St. Louis Business Journal. Jim’s Delta Chi fraternity brother Bob Schreiber lives in St. Louis with his wife, Kathi, and Kathi has promised to ‘adopt’ Connor while he is there. We will be excited to see Bob and Kathi when we help Connor move into his apartment, as the last time we got together was pre-COVID. “Our daughter, Mackenzie, also moved this summer, from Columbia, S.C., to Tallahassee, Fla., to complete her doctoral internship at FSU. We got to explore the area (and the breweries) for a few days and liked it a lot, although we are for sure looking forward to visiting when it is not the middle of summer. “Jim and I have seen quite a few folks over the past weeks. We have our regular Bonn Place Brewing Saturdays, of course, with Bill Glaser, and Bob Bohny and his wife, Kim, joined us at our last one to celebrate Bill’s 60th. We will see Bob and Kim next weekend for the Phillies. Every time we all get together, it is like 40 years have not even passed. “Jim and I were lucky to visit Taffy Curtin and Joe Clifford at their place in Lake Ariel a couple of weeks ago. They have a gorgeous property right on the lake (complete with a really cute dog) and are fantastic hosts. “Jim and I ran into Phil Gauffreau at the Kelsea Ballerini concert at Musikfest last week—not hard to do, as Phil is pretty much the Musikfest king and is very likely to be there at any time the festival is running. I am back to school this week and will definitely be ready to tailgate!” Our classmate, Judy Marks, received Lehigh’s Excellence in Industry Award. The Excellence in Industry Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated professional achievement of the highest caliber in the management of a for-profit organization. Judy is the chair, CEO and president at Otis Worldwide Corporation, the world’s leading company for elevator and escalator manufacturing, installation and service. “She has been an advocate
