Bulletin-Spring23

CLASS NOTES | SPRING 2023 | 49 the Rays. Hang in there, and keep our column going at least ’til our 70th reunion. Thanks for your good work.” Then when I told Don we had downsized, he passed along some good advice to all on downsizing: “We moved from our Quail Creek C.C. home in Naples to about 1,400 square feet here in Tampa. It’s a relief not to have to maintain a home and a pool! One caution: You will take too much furniture and too much other ‘stuff’ to your new home. As hard as we tried and as much as we sold and gave away (kids don’t want old and valued furniture anymore), we still had an extra garage full of stuff when our new home was furnished. Good luck!” Finally, a brief item from Bernie Blum. He has retired to Maine from Florida, leading an active life and adjusting to aging, as we all are. He notes that he “valued his Lehigh education.” ’56 Bill Burgin, 534 W. Beechtree Lane, Wayne, PA 19087, (610) 6887374 (H); w.burgin@att.net As I write, the Philadelphia sports scene is booming. The Phillies brought baseball excitement to our area as they faced the Houston Astros in the 2022 World Series, even though they lost in Texas in game six with a score of 4-1. Now, the Philadelphia Eagles football team may be headed for the Super Bowl. Well, back in Bethlehem—not so hot. The Hawks’ football year resulted in a two-win and nineloss season, wrapped up by November’s loss, 14-11, to Lafayette. Here’s to the 2023 season! On Lehigh-Lafayette day, Nov. 19, I was in touch by email with fellow Bulletin columnist and Sigma Chi brother Bill Helfrich ’58. He and Anne were “stuck in their house” as 77 inches of snow blanketed nearby Buffalo and their town of Orchard Park, N.Y. Bill said they had to miss the Lehigh-Lafayette viewing party and his beloved Buffalo Bills had to move Sunday’s football game to Detroit. It is good to be in touch with Ron Murray from Stamford, Conn. Ron, Judy and two of their daughters visited the 9/11 Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pa., finding it “moving and emotional” and worth the trip. Ron reports that 23 years ago, he wrote to John Milnor, inviting him to play golf. John, who lives in Florida, recently found the letter and replied, but the contest hasn’t occurred yet. John dubbed himself the world champion in delayed response to correspondence. Bruce Waechter reports that he got to the Richmond University football match on Sept. 17 at Lehigh, joining a lively tailgate party with Ed Hatfield ’55 and the entire Hatfield clan. Bruce’s wife, Janet, died in July 2021. He is expecting holiday visits to Ambler, Pa., from their far-flung three children. Do you have memories of the Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry build-up, such as large forms with ferocious messages on living unit lawns? If so, let me hear. And don’t miss the photo of the Class of ’56 bench, our gift to Lehigh, on page 47 of the summer 2022 Lehigh Bulletin. Meanwhile, send news and have a safe and well 2023. ’57 James Watson, 774 Highview Drive, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. (210) 891-1246 (H); jwatson@ execsearchine.net I received a lovely note from Marilyn Broder, wife of Lesley Browder, who passed away in late ’20. I sat with Les at our 50th and remember him fondly. Marilyn met Les in ’55 while attending Pembroke/Brown. She remembers all the great times she had at Phi Sig parties and was so happy when she received a Lehigh scarf from Les. And then, he realized she already had a brown and white scarf from Brown. Les had a great career in education: as a public school teacher in Massachusetts; director of the Englewood School Development program funded by the Ford Foundation in New Jersey; as well as teaching at both Stanford and Hofstra universities. It’s hard to compile all his honors and accomplishments in public education! We also lost William Pennebaker, who had an impressive career in engineering physics and a Ph.D. from Rutgers, as well as worked at IBM for many years and still holds several patents that he developed over the years in physics. I also had a nice conversation last summer with Jon Maresca, who finally retired from the food service business in LA and moved down to Rancho Bernardo after a few years in San Diego. Jon is still in great shape after getting a new hip last year. He grew up in Rockville Center, Long Island and has never moved back. My apologies to Dan Pursell, who was also at our 55th reunion from Oceanside, Calif. So, we had seven at our 55th, not six as I had listed in the Fall ’22 Bulletin. The seven include me, Walt Mannherz, Dan Pursell, Jacque Smith, Dave Walker, Rocky Rokhsar and Rob Maida. Dan had a great career as a Navy officer and lawyer in California, as well as an elder and field representative for the Theological Education Fund. Neil Funnell sent me a note last July from Hilton Head, S.C. Neil has lived there for the last 25 years and loves the community. Many of his old friends from the West Coast love to visit, and he still stays in contact with his ATO fraternity brothers Dick Daugherty, Don Burgess and Clark Riley. Neil is president of the Investment Club and also involved in the HH Ethics Society and the World Affairs Council of HH. Still plays a little tennis but loves horseback riding with the HH Fox Hunting Club. Send me some emails soon, and have a great spring and summer. Regards. ’58 Bill Helfrich, 80 Southwick Drive, Orchard Park, NY 14127. (716) 662-7927 (H); bh7831@ aol.com I’ve got the saddest news! Our classmate and friend Brooks Goldman died in Bethany Beach, Del. I remember how much time he spent on organizing class reunions and activities and representing us on the Lehigh Board. He and June loved Lehigh, and we miss him. See his mention in the In Remembrance section for all his Lehigh achievements. Ed Hummers sent me his obituary. His day of honor will be at Bethany Beach on his birthday and also during our 65th reunion. We received a card from June at the beach to enjoy our snow! Don Garaventi called to reminisce about the good times at Lehigh with Brooks and June. We also caught up that Don is now living in Boston and a Red Sox fan but still rooting for the Eagles. Don Kohler’s update included their annual mini-reunion at Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant in Lansdale, with Marge and Glenn Gabrielle still living in Absecon, N.J. Glenn is her caretaker, now that Marge is failing. They have a granddaughter freshman at Georgia Tech taking structural engineering and on the club tennis team. Maryellen and Howard Foulke are doing well and living in a retirement home in Lansdale. Wayne Harris still lives in a senior citizen community in Lansdale. His wife, Judy, passed away two years ago. Alice and Don Kohler still live in their home in New Market, Md., and spend winter in their condo in St. Petersburg. Don spoke with Fred Townsend. He and wife Corinne are looking at lifetime retirement commu-
