CLASS NOTES | SPRING 2023 | 47 ’51 Dick Allen 15010 Shell Point Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33908. (239) 243-0969 (H); dickelise2@ gmail.com Jack Vanderryn writes: “I stayed on at Lehigh for eight years to complete my master’s degree and Ph.D. (1955) in chemistry and then joined Ralph Steinhardt, a Lehigh Ph.D., at the chemistry department in what is now Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., [with] my wife, Margrit. We married in 1956 and are now in our 66th year together. After three years at Virginia Tech, I joined the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), first in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and later in Washington, D.C., where we lived in suburban Maryland. The AEC eventually became the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), where I worked on managing research on a variety of energy resources, including solar, geothermal and electric batteries, and helped to establish the international cooperative energy research program at the newly established International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris, France. I then left DOE to become the agency director for energy and environment at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), working with developing countries to strengthen their energy and environment programs. I left the U.S. government and finally spent 14 years with the Moriah Fund, a family foundation in D.C., to manage its grant making to nonprofit organizations focused on conserving biodiversity in the U.S. and developing countries. After retiring from Moriah, we eventually moved to San Carlos, Calif., to rent the house next door to our son Danny (a programmer at Google), wife Winnie (an artist), son Eli and daughter Madeleine. After his kids finished college in the Boston area and stayed there, Danny and Winnie decided to also move there leaving us with no nearby family. Thus, we moved back to Bethesda, Md., three-and-a-half years ago into a very nice senior retirement facility called Fox Hill to be near to our younger, unmarried daughter Amy, who has given us great support since our latest, and perhaps last, move, having reached age 92! Come visit us in Bethesda!
