Celebrations 2. associated with our reunion. Someone once said, “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.” While reviewing the photos of the Parade of Classes held during Lehigh’s most recent reunion this past June, I noticed that the Class of ’74 wore the same design of jersey that we wore during our award-winning performance in 2023. (Of course, their jerseys had the number 74 on the front and back.) Maybe we’ve started a new tradition! ’74 Bill White, 5418 Holiday Drive, Allentown, PA 18104, whitebil1974@gmail.com Rather than bury the lead, I’ll report from the outset that the mighty Class of ’74 captured the coveted Petty Flag this year for the second time in our history, part of a wildly successful 50th reunion. I’ll get back to our winning parade skit, but note that 104 of our classmates attended reunion events this year and all of us had a great time. There were events throughout the weekend, but I’ll just report on the ones I attended. It began with the annual Brown and White dinner, where three of us were honored for our contributions. Nick Noel won the Alumni Award, Vince Munley won the Eugene G. Grace Award, and I got the Joseph R. Persa Award—what were they thinking?—and was honored for 50 years as your class correspondent. (What was I thinking?) Friday evening began with a reception at the President’s House, where we presented President Helble with a giant check for almost $2.7 million, representing our giving since our last reunion. Amy Gross, of the Alumni Office, reported that our class giving totals more than $16 million since we graduated. Then we walked over to ReunionFest, where we got to catch up with even more classmates. Our class president, Gus Gustafson, had arranged for a post-ReunionFest gathering at Saucon Valley Country Club’s Weyhill House, and that was well attended, too. Many of us purchased Lehigh Engineer hats or visors and brown, white and gold jerseys emblazed with No. 74, and after lunch under the big tent Saturday, we donned our uniforms to join the Parade of Classes. Our theme was “Undefeated and Unsurpassed,” and we carried signs recognizing: - Our football team beat Lafayette all three years our class was on varsity—48-19, 14-6 and 45-13. - Football All-Americans Kim McQuilken (QB), Bill Schlegel (TE), Dan Mulholland (OT) and Roger McFillin (LB). - We won the Lambert Cup in 1973 and made our first-ever postseason football NCAA appearance. - Wrestler Tom Sculley went 26-0-1 in winning the 134-pound national championship in 1974. Our plan for the skit was to approach the judges to the Alumni Band’s playing “Rearing Tearing,” then have our football players line up and run a play against token Lafayette opposition. In this case, that turned out to be my grandsons, Luke (7) and Brett (5) Miller, and Eileen (Evans) Colahan’s 1. 3. 4. 5.
