54 | LEHIGH ALUMNI BULLETIN | CLASS NOTES tracing family genealogy. While at Lehigh, he resided in McClintic-Marshall and Emery House, and was manager of the Hockey Club for five years. He is married to Beverly, and they have four children in a blended family. Tennis, travel and genealogy were the staples of early retirement, but now it is tennis and genealogy. It is good to know that tennis is still on the schedule because Buzz reports lower spine and left hip replacement surgery in recent years. In 1966 Bill Kuhl started a lifelong career with Procter & Gamble, retiring in 2000. Along the way he earned an MBA at Xavier University and spent 1988 to 1994 in Japan as associate director. His best student memories are from participating in the marching and symphonic bands and the friendships made for life. Bill remained active with Lehigh, serving as president of the Alumni Association between 1999 and 2004, member of the Lehigh Board of Trustees, and member of the Lehigh Global Council. He continues to support the Global Union, and is proud of its growth to one of the largest campus organizations. Bill reported, “This past December we moved from our home in Bradenton, Fla., to a new retirement community (The Barclay) in Charlotte. As we turned 80, we decided it was time to do a favor for our two children and move while we are still in good health and able to control our lives. We have found the move to be invigorating as we simplify our lives.” Bill and Alice have been married over 50 years and have two children. Hank Schlenker provided a wonderful update to share. “In celebration of passing the 80-year mark (my wife Gayle) and approaching it in September (me), we had a large 80th joint birthday party in between our two birthday dates, with relatives joining us from around the country, as well as many friends and neighbors, and a couple of Betas—Dave Etzel and his family came from Connecticut, and Bob Schmidt came from Annapolis. Bob and Jackie Schmidt have moved to a home in Delaware—they now live at a resort community called the Peninsula. Earlier in the year we visited Liz and Jim Marchant in Naples, Fla. We all enjoyed a meeting of the Tower Society while we were there. Jim and Liz are up in their Boston home helping to take care of their first grandchild (and very much enjoying it). I am still working a couple of days a week at a real estate investment group, and am still a member of the Solomons Island fire department, although I am no longer on active duty as an ambulance driver or EMT aide. In July I played golf with Adrian Corbiere ’67 at his home course in Edgewater, Md., and while we did not set any scoring records, we had a lot of fun and did not lose many balls.” ’67 Eric Hamilton, journeyman618@gmail.com ’68 George Klacik, 27 Oak Forest Lane, Summit, NJ 07901, gklacikjr@aol.com, (908) 273-7850. Thanks to all of you who responded to my lonely correspondent email. The response was so good I’ll be using it over the next several issues of the magazine. Ted Howells wrote: “I read Jim Shields’ discussion in the last class column with interest and noted he had one glaring omission. I was with him that day on the second floor of the post office building on 4th Street when we both took the oath to join the U.S. Army! I had already been reclassified 1-A, so my clock was ticking. Exactly one week after graduation, I began basic training at Fort Dix and followed that with advanced infantry training. Then off to Fort Benning (now Fort Moore) for infantry OCS, commissioned as an infantry second lieutenant in May 1969. Judy and I were then married in Packer Chapel on a Saturday, and I started jump school the following Monday morning. Next came assignment as a platoon leader with the 82nd Airborne Division, specialized advisor training and Vietnamese language school. In May 1970 I arrived in Vietnam to become a Mobile Advisory Team leader in the Mekong Delta, living with and advising Vietnamese rangers and militia. After returning home and getting discharged, we spent that combat pay ($110 per month!) traveling around Europe for the entire summer. We moved to Montclair, N.J., where we lived for a year on the second floor of a subdivided house with Frede and Jim Mirenda downstairs. Twenty years working in New York at Price Waterhouse, RCA Corporation, Avon Products then Columbia Pictures. When Sony purchased Columbia, it was off to La La Land in 1991, living in Pacific Palisades, Calif., and eventually becoming CFO of Sony Pictures. That was followed by another CFO position at Beacon Pictures. Time for a change, so in 2020 we moved to the low country of South Carolina, three acres along a dirt road on Spring Island. I meet up with classmate Rich Niemeyer every March for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, 27 tournaments attended and counting.” Rob Eisele wrote: “Several classmates/Alpha Tau Omega fraternity brothers who reside in California have established an informal tradition of a oncea-year get-together in Newport Beach, hosted by the Lambs and includes a spectacular harbor cruise in their electric Duffy and dinner at a waterfront restaurant. They are Dave Lamb (IE), Rob Eisele (ChemE), Bob Surdi (EE) and Ron Suiter ’67 (EE). Dave lives on Lido Island in Newport Beach, Rob in Alamo, Bob in San Diego, and Ron is a longtime resident of Palos Verdes. The group has had diverse careers: Dave (real estate investor and home developer), Rob (real-time operational software serving the process and utilities industries), Bob (restaurant owner), Ron (McDonnell Douglas/Boeing chief engineer).” Mike Malsberger sent the following, and I will have to remember not to piss him off when I see him. “I retired from Lehigh in August of 2019 after 30 years. Prior to that I was a senior research chemist at Shell. Worked in radio broadcasting part-time (engineering, not on-air) after a short stint in the U.S. Navy. Currently, my time is divided between messing around with Linux (I also build my own computers) and practicing the martial arts (the Pai Family system of kung-fu and Tai Chi, generally known as the White Dragon Style).” Bill Papa emailed: “I am living the good life in Houston, Texas, with my wife Yenny. Daughter Amy lives in Austin. Daughter Lauren and four grandchildren (Lizzie, Nate, Ben and Lily) live not too far away in Brenham. My son, Chris, and grandson Lucas live in San Carlos, Calif., near San Francisco. “We lost two Lambda Chi brothers in the last year or so. John Evanowsky passed in 2022, and George Conly passed in 2023. Some of us started a weekly group video call in which John and George participated, and we were lucky to spend some time with them while they were around. John was always the one to stir things up with a clever quip, and George was always the thoughtful one. We miss them dearly. I stay in touch with Roger Wall, who lives in the Lehigh Valley with his wife Marilyn, and Al Casazza, who lives in Minnesota. And I also stay in touch with a couple of ’69s, Steve Cuyler and Barry Edwards. Steve and Jo Ann are on Cape Cod having cocktails at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port on Fridays, and Barry is full-time managing Judy near Philadelphia.” More to come next issue! MMXXIV
