His child, Scott Carpenter, is a member of the Class of 1986. John J. Coughlin ’51, Oceanside, Calif., Jan. 15, 2025. Coughlin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for Bethlehem Steel and Western Electric. His children, John Coughlin ’74 and F. Michael Coughlin ’74, are members of the Lehigh family. Herbert L. Hoover ’51, Big Flats, N.Y., Jan. 14, 2025. A veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, Hoover worked as a physicist for Corning Inc. Robert D. Stoehr ’51, Byfield, Mass., March 29, 2025. Stoehr served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and then worked for White Pine Sash Company. Daniel R. Kaplan ’52, Mendham, N.J., Jan. 23, 2025. A member of Tau Delta Phi, Kaplan served in the U.S. Air Force. He was president of Metem Corporation, a machining company, and then president of Kemp Industries, a manufacturer of hydraulic pumps, motors and valves for the defense industry. James F. Cooke ’53, Granger, Ind., Feb. 17, 2025. Cooke was a member of Theta Chi and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He made his career in sales, sales management and marketing for Alis-Chalmers and Wheelabrator-Frye. Peter L. Hoyt ’53, Blue Hill, Maine, March 5, 2025. A member of Sigma Phi and the Marching 97, Hoyt served in the U.S. Navy after graduation. He served in the Naval Reserve for 26 years and was a commander. He worked in banking consulting. William C. Ladew ’53, Fayetteville, N.Y., April 5, 2025. Ladew worked for General Electric for 28 years in radar, sonar and software. Charles J. Metz ’53, Kennett Square, Pa., Jan. 10, 2025. Metz was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a patent attorney for Union Carbide and Johnson & Johnson. Richard A. Moyer ’53, Martinez, Ga., Jan. 5, 2025. Moyer worked for DuPont for 36 years. William C. Schulz ’53, Gulf Breeze, Fla., April 17, 2025. Schulz was a U.S. Marine in the post-Korean Conflict era. He went on to fly commercial flights for Eastern Airlines. Ronald E. Van Horn ’53, Lynchburg, Va., July 14, 2024. Alvin O. Converse ’54, Santa Fe, N.M., Jan. 10, 2025. An Alpha Sigma Phi and Marching 97 member, Converse was a professor in Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering for nearly 40 years. He was also a member of the Tower Society. Malcolm Poland ’54, Evanston, Ill., Oct. 1, 2024. George H. Schumacher Jr. ’54, Rye, N.H., Dec. 19, 2024. A member of Phi Kappa Theta and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Schumacher flew with Pan American Airways. Bernard Blum ’55, Miami Beach, Fla., Jan. 28, 2025. Blum was a member of Tau Delta Phi and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked for the family business, Paul Blum Company, for decades. He founded Container Yachts. Patrick J. Dempsey ’55, Sanibel Island, Fla., Jan. 5, 2025. Dempsey was the president of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He worked on the Jupiter Guided Missile Project during his military service and made his civilian career in the laundry industry. His child, PJ Dempsey ’96, is a member of the Lehigh family. Clayton E. Groff ’55, Penn Hills, Pa., March 7, 2025. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Groff worked as a metallurgical technician at U.S. Steel. Robert W. James ’55, Marietta, Ga., Feb. 14, 2025. A Psi Upsilon member, James was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had a 40-year career at Huntington Alloys. Robert S. Fetterman ’56, Wilmington, N.C., Dec. 27, 2024. A member of Pi Lambda Phi, Fetterman had a 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, serving as director of finance, and later as division controller in two divisions. Bruce J. Gold ’56, Hanover Township, Pa., Feb. 13, 2025. Gold was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked for PPL for 38 years as superintendent of the Martins Creek Facility. John P. Goldsborough ’56, Los Altos, Calif., March 3, 2024. Goldsborough worked as a physicist for 40 years. He developed first-generation argon gas and molecular lasers. He was a member of the Tower Society. Hartley C. King ’56, Elizabeth Township, Pa., Jan. 31, 2025. King was a member of Alpha Tau Omega, the lacrosse team and the Marching 97. He served in the U.S. Army and worked for the family business, King and Keeney Inc. He also owned the King Family Restaurants. He was also a member of the Tower Society. Thomas B. Morgan ’56, Montgomery, Ohio, March 15, 2025. Morgan served in the U.S. Air Force and made his career with Procter & Gamble. Charles N. Rosenberg ’56, Oxford, Pa., March 30, 2025. Rosenberg was a member of The Brown and White, the Glee Club and Mustard & Cheese. He worked as a computer programmer in the insurance industry. H. Morgan Ruth ’56, Devon, Pa., Jan. 31, 2025. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Ruth worked in advertising at Aitkin Kynett. E. Richard Droesch ’57, Hobe Sound, N.Y., Dec. 10, 2024. Droesch was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and the Glee Club, as well as a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was president of Florence Corporation, the family business. He was also the mayor of Laurel Hollow, N.Y. His children, Jacqueline Droesch Brown ’87, Stephen Droesch ’89 and Carol (Droesch) Manning ’93, are members of the Lehigh family. Elgin H. Lenhardt Jr. ’57, East Norriton, Pa., March 16, 2025. A member of Alpha Chi Rho, he served in the U.S. Army after graduation. He worked as a partner in the family insurance business. His sibling, Oliver Lenhardt, was a member of the Class of 1950. Robert L. Michal ’57 M.S. ’59, Glen Head, N.Y., Feb. 17, 2025. Michal made his career with Sperry Rand Corp., where he helped to design and support the navigation system for the U.S. Navy’s Trident Nuclear Submarine Program. His child, Robert Michal, is a member of the Class of 1987. James T. Waples ’57, Oconomowoc, Wis., April 4, 2025. Waples was a member of Delta Phi. He worked for Briggs & Stratton and Marine Travelift. Willard H. Berrian ’58, New York, N.Y., March 13, 2025. Berrian was a member of the Marching 97 and Sigma Nu. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He worked in finance and retired from Lehman Brothers. Philip L. Bianco ’58, Elk Grove, Calif., Jan. 30, 2025. Bianco worked for the California Department of Transportation, retiring as supervising transportation engineer. Robert J. Canning ’58, Walnut Creek, Calif., Feb. 21, 2025. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Canning worked for Shell Oil. Oluf M. Hansen ’58, Montville, N.J., March 12, 2025. Hansen was an executive at Prudent Publishing. W.
