Alumni Bulletin Spring25

CLASS NOTES | SPRING 2025 | 61 band’s Death (Exclusive),” by Jen Juneau, July 24, 2024. I contacted Denise, and she said Scott was an amazing man. He battled pancreatic cancer, and they continued to travel until a few months before he passed. Scott was a lifelong member of the Sierra Club, avid camper, lover of nature, active Buddhist mediator, and at 6’5”, was known as a gentle giant, speaking softly and preferring to listen “because he already knew what he thought; he wanted to hear what others had to say.” Scott is also survived by his mother and daughter. Doug Pitney, our 45th Reunion chairperson, reminds us to plan to attend this milestone reunion on June 12-15, 2025. Forty-five years have gone by very quickly, and life is short— so don’t miss this opportunity to spend time with your classmates, marvel at the growth of the campus, and enjoy the weekend of festivities. ’81Tom Wocklish, twocklish@alum. lehigh.edu A beam of sunshine, a breath of fresh air, a presence that permeates smiles wherever and whenever. That’s how I remember Linda (Taylor) Ferguson during our days on South Mountain. Linda responded to my plea for communication as follows: “I am still traveling the world with American Airlines as a purser. I just visited Christina (Sepahpur) Scott in San Francisco. Looking forward to the wedding of Kim (Thompson) Zdon’s daughter. I attend as many operas as I can with Anne Kline, who is on the board of the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Washington D.C. opera and Wolf Trap in Va. A fun group of 15 of us ’81ers have celebrated our 50th in Miami at the Fontainebleau, our 60th in Nashville, and our 65th in NYC: Fran (Sturiale) Bartlett, Val (Lychak) Thomas, Karen (Siegler) Sandler, Gail Schargel Powell, Mary Alice Panerello St. Clair, Cindy Frick, Donna Farkas Hoffman, Carol (Ehrens) Gordon, Beth (Moorstein) Wilf, Alisa Kauffman, Donna (Karasic) Davidson, Bonnie (Lewis) Torcivia, Kim (Thompson) Zdon and Christina (Sepahpur) Scott. “I have three kids; my two daughters are in NYC, both in private wealth with Morgan Stanley. Katie graduated from Lehigh [in 2021] and was a Gamma Phi. My oldest daughter and son went to Syracuse. My son is now pursuing his pilot ratings! “All the best. Stay healthy and live every day.” Anne Kline and Linda attended their 47th Lehigh-Lafayette game. A winning season! The unseeded Lehigh football team rallied to defeat No. 9 Richmond 20-16 in a first-round game of the FCS playoffs. Lehigh advanced to a second-round game at eighth-seeded Idaho, but lost 34-13. I was wishing Lehigh could have won its second National Football Championship. Remember that celebration? Pete Dent reached out to let us know all is well. Husband, father of four and actively retired. For fun he is a research fellow with CDG Environmental, where he enjoys participation in science projects, serves as a board member of Greater Valley YMCA, and has continued involvement with the Da Vinci Science Center and U.S. Magnetic Materials Center. Spare time is spent as a ski instructor and world traveler. Who drives from home in Allentown to Newfoundland? Alaska? Speedier transpo to Kenya, Scotland and Iceland. Pete does. Carry on, Pete! Kevin James “Wendell” Wilk passed away in August of an apparent heart attack. His wife, Nina, and son held a funeral in Raleigh, N.C. Many classmates, fellow ATO, Sigma Chi, Theta Delt brothers and rugby teammates attended the sad event: Dave Silver, Clarke Tobin, John Davidson, Hugh Klein, Bob Romeo, Tom O’Donnell, Mark Hessinger ’83, Peter Shouvlin ’82 and Linda Taylor Ferguson. Wonderful stories were shared. Wendell’s son, Ethan, looks and sounds just like Kevin. Nina and Ethan were very appreciative of all the support and love. ’82 John P. Belardo, 152 Berkeley Circle, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920. (973) 425-8755 (B); jbelardo@ mdmc-law.com. On Facebook, like “Lehigh University Class of 1982.” Having written this column since 2013, I have decided it is time to pass the torch to my friend Michael Whalen of Delta Tau Delta. Mike will bring a fresh perspective and new outlook to this page. Mike can be reached at michaelwhalen81@ gmail.com. Don’t be confused by the 81 in Mike’s email. That was his high school football number. At Lehigh, he wore 88. Randy Blasdell has lived in Lancaster County, since 1985 and is in his 41st year running his own financial advisory practice. Randy wrote he was heading up to Bethlehem to visit one of his Chi Psi brothers, Chip Rust. Kha Nguyen was with IBM as an electrical engineer for 25 years and then with Quanta Tech for nine years. He is married with two children. Peter Dionisos is in semi-retirement from running the production facility for FenziAG7 in Downington, Pa. Peter has two daughters, both of whom were accepted at Lehigh but did not attend because it was “Dad’s school.” Much gratitude and thanks to all who wrote in here the last 13 years. Signing off for the last time here, your classmate—John Patrick Belardo. Editor’s note: For 13 years, John has filled this space with his wit and humor and done a herculean job of keeping classmates up to date on each other’s lives. We appreciate all he’s done for the university and look forward to what he gets up to next. ’83 Nancy Liu Freedman, nancyliulehigh83@gmail.com Happy spring, Class of ’83! I did not receive much news this time, but I did meet up with classmates at various events. Martin Selzer wrote that he volunteered again to be a judge at the 2024 Summer Research Expo. The Expo showcases student projects from interdisciplinary undergraduate research programs. Martin enjoyed meeting the students and was amazed at the wonderful projects the students worked on. Clem Palevich and Ray Glemser also participated as judges for the event. Thanks for spending the day judging and engaging with the student researchers. Sandy Denton joined the pickleball craze a few years ago and now is an elite player. She has won many tournaments and was invited this year to compete in the International Pickleball Championship Tournament in Texas. She came in fourth place, but she is determined to get a medal next year. Great job, Sandy! At the Leadership Recognition dinner, Ann Lewnes and her husband, Greg Welch ’22P, were inducted into the 1865 Society, recognizing donors of $1 million or more. Thanks for your generous support! Kira (Cauwels) Mendez and Steve Mendez celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a vow renewal at Packer Memorial Church. It was a beautiful ceremony, and it was extra special to include their son and daughter. My husband and I attended, along with Sandy Denton and partner Bene Bron, Paul Wiedorn and wife Lorraine (Scioli) Wiedorn ’84G, and Jessica Huertas ’94 and Donald Outing. Congratulations!
