21-22 LTS Annual Report

STRATEGIC PLANNING 9 President Helble kicked off Lehigh's strategic planning process in spring 2022. We in LTS are participating in the university-wide planning process and also undertaking our own internal strategic planning in alignment with the university's timeline. Here’s a bit of what we’ve been up to. 202 1 /22 | ANNUAL REPORT | 35 MARCH, APRIL 2022: PHASE 0 President Helble announced the start of “Phase 0”: a review of progress on goals announced in Lehigh's 2009 strategic plan, leading to the Lehigh Phase 0 Report to campus. In LTS: Staff, managers, and directors began a review of progress we have made since 2016 in achieving the goals we set back in 2015, leading to our own Phase 0 Report: Major Accomplishments from 2016-22 LTS Strategic Plan. MAY, JUNE Lehigh Leadership prepared for Phase 1 by taking stock of the accomplishments and identifying major themes that will organize the campus planning efforts. LTS Leadership, directors, and managers met to discuss recent trends in our fields (innovative ways of thinking, emerging technologies that create new opportunities and affordances, etc.) that we believe will have the greatest impact over the next five years on university teaching and learning; research and scholarship; and university business operations. Using this glimpse into the future, we began planning for actions we should be taking to ensure that we are ready to use–and ready to help others use–the new tools, technologies, and approaches that are on the horizon. JULY: PHASE 1 BEGINS Lehigh Leadership identified four broad themes– Research for Impact, Teaching with Purpose, Smart Growth, and The Lehigh User Experience–and five "through-lines" that connect to each of the four themes: Diversity & Inclusion, Environmental & Fiscal Sustainability, Operational Excellence, Place; and Global. Small working groups were tasked to engage Lehigh stakeholders starting in Fall 2022 to gather ideas and then to develop 4-6 strategic initiatives under each theme. When the four Lehigh Strategic Planning Working Groups begin inviting campus input in the fall, we will need to be ready to share our insights, experience, and expertise to help shape the future of Lehigh. Let’s identify what we in LTS should be doing now to start getting ready for the kinds of initiatives those four working groups will ultimately recommend. (Whatever they are, we know we’ll be involved and we know the campus will count on us for leadership and for support. Let’s get ready.) Supporting Research and Scholarship Fostering Innovation in Teaching and Learning Enhancing Infrastructure, Systems, and Security Refining Internal LTS Operations LTS staff gathered at our July LTS Strategic Planning Meeting with the following two goals in mind: We focused on the following four themes: Staff shared their thoughts and recommendations with one another and with LTS Leadership. Then we all headed out to the FML Breezeway for our Summer LTS BBQ and Ice Cream Social, with games on the Maginnes Lawn. WHAT'S NEXT Strategic planning activity will continue through June 2023, when the Lehigh Strategic Plan will be announced. We will finalize the LTS Strategic Plan shortly thereafter and announce it in August 2023. This means that a year from now, when you are reading the LTS 22-23 Annual Report, you’ll read all about what emerged from these many conversations. You’ll find stories about how we’re hard at work preparing to implement the Strategic Plan. But I hope you’ll keep connected to us throughout the year, because we won’t be waiting that long to put good ideas into practice. In fact, we’ve already gotten started.
