2023 Stabler Scholarship Report

AARON JOSE Hometown: Pelham, NY College: P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science Major: Mechanical Engineering Describe one of your proudest accomplishments. My biggest accomplishment during my Lehigh experience has been holding a leadership position in the Formula SAE club. I lead the brakes and pedals subteam and am responsible for the whole vehicle brakes system. Before coming to Lehigh, I had essentially no experience with manual machining, computer-aided design, engineering hand calculations, or working on a team. This role has taught me about all of these, and I feel as if I am an actual engineer working on a project that I will see working by the end of the school year. I am proud that this club has led me to meet so many intelligent and driven people whom I am sure I will continue to interact and network with throughout my life. Lehigh’s strategic plan, Inspiring the Future Makers, is built upon the notion that “The way forward is not yet defined. The future is ours for the making.” How do you intend to make your mark on campus and beyond? My goal is to establish a strong understanding in all the various fields of mechanical engineering so that eventually I can push the limits in industries like aerospace or automotive, especially on the materials side, for the betterment of society. I firmly believe that having experience at a young age in creating designs and those designs ultimately failing is the most valuable experience to have. I seek to take these failures and hone my skills to produce innovative designs that have large impacts on society. A message from Aaron: Scholarships are beneficial for my family and me by lessening the large cost and burden of tuition. Additionally, I can focus more on academics and not have to make sacrifices for the sake of money, which would hurt either my grades or mental health. My family and I are first-generation immigrants, and my brother is the first in the family to go to college in America. This naturally led us to acquire significant debt already. Scholarships like these can lessen this large burden and allow my family and I to maintain a strong footing without needing to sacrifice other necessities. Fun Fact: I built my own gaming PC over the summer and used it to teach myself Solidworks.
